What is the 80% bracket?
If you want real help then You need to say what your numbers are. Do you know what it costs you to run the truck? How much revenue are you doing and where are you running and what are you pulling? What’s your fuel mpg? What kinda truck?
SO .. Where is the money - most OO going UNDER

Oh my God 8 out 10 of us are going broke.
If you have a decent dry van(s) you want to sell call me. Or let me know where you're turning it in for self repo.Adieu, PPDCT, otterinthewater and 5 others Thank this. -
One thing I can advise is to avoid tollways, whenever possible. It helps tremendously.
TollGuru app helps quite a bit in calculating alternative routes - I am surprised, it is still free and without annoying adds. If they charge, I'll pay...hope they don't read this.
For example, on a 1600 mile loop IL-York,PA/Winchester,VA/Hagerstown, MD areas - IL you can save up to $500, if you choose a proper routing. Yes, it involves that ordeal on I-68 when you are heavy but make 3-4 trips over there like I do and you save up to 2000K a month. Also, I find US-30 in OH/IN bearable, if there are no time constraints.
Let the megas bleed and pay to PA/OH/IN on their already leveled playing field.just_sayin, PE_T, bzinger and 4 others Thank this. -

It is hard out here for an OO that is not leased to a major carrier. This is across the board for almost everyone. It isn’t as bad for some depending on their trailer type, direct customers, location of operations, and many other things.
That said for me as a flatbed in Texas my gross is down 30% from last year. I still turn a profit I’m happy with but I also don’t have top tier equipment or monthly payments. I can definitely see a truck payment or breakdowns crushing the bottom line.
I also don’t run cheap and have sat much more frequently than I would like. Hard to deliver and reload with a good paying load the same day. Last year I was home every weekend. This year I get delayed because I can’t find good loads and even leave on a Tuesday simply because there aren’t loads on Monday.
Just keep in mind trucking changes all the time month to month year to year and nothing stays the same. That said I’m about ready to pull the trigger on a belly dump trailer and park my flatbed for awhile. Rates out of this quarry near me puts flatbed to shame. Don’t be afraid to change.shatteredsquare, kenn2632, ibcalm19 and 7 others Thank this. -

Being able to adapt and overcome is a critical trait if you're going to be an independent.
Leasing to a major carrier trades money for business work.
It is not easy thankfully!.. and you are trading a significant % of your profits for not doing the MC sales work, billing, etc if you take the easy path and become a lease operator.
Some people are far better off being a lease op if they don't want to deal with all the other sides of the business.86scotty and blairandgretchen Thank this.
