How Long Will a New Truck Last?

The megas don't buy their trucks.

They simply lease them.

It's cheaper to lease then to buy. And pay for repairs as the miles add on.

Much like people don't want to buy a car. They'd rather lease. They prefer a new car every 3 years rather then deal with repairs down the road.

I'm starting to lean towards leasing myself.

 

I love it, how many trucks do some of you buy in a year?

Megas .... I think it was mentioned don't buy trucks, they are leased. They cycle the trucks based on the financial end of the truck, not because of emissions.

The biggest problems are that they make trucks to be as lite as possible thus putting cheaper components like switches and wiring harnesses.
And to make them drive and feel like a car. Which is the only way most companies can fill seats.

 

Totally agree, drivers have to crawl under the truck and inspect it everyday, Shop mechanics need to go to the manufacture classes to learn the product, exactly what it does, how , and why..

Most of these companies do not train mechanics, they promote the wash rack guy, to tire buster, then to brakes, and so on without training them, back to my line "The mechanic training can not teach what he does not know." Paccar, Volvo, offer specific training classes to the service issues, most companies just do not want to pay,

The companies that make the non-brand specific items like Meritor, etc. offer the same type of training.

When I worked for Valley Bulk they had 1 mechanic they sent out to get trained on ABS brake systems, when he moved on, the abs systems stopped getting repaired, and the excuses started about newer stuff being junk, when it is a case of untrained personnel doing the service work.

IWX trains there mechanics, I drove 500,000 miles for them you dont see there trucks broken down, because they get inspected by someone that has been trained on what to look for in the fuel bay, Fairly common for the fueler to say, "Driver pull it into Bay 12 we spotted a potential issue and want to take care of it so you dont have a problem down the road." My first load got cancelled, because I noted on the pretrip that I had a hub seal weeping, went from the fuel bay to a work bay with minutes.

The only company I have seen in 30 plus years of driving that know, and service there trucks properly.

 

There is a very small part of me that thinks for the money paccar, volvo cat cummins et all make on these parts, and the tremendous personal risk we all take in owning them.. That training on maintenance should be free.

Its a little more socialist than i can stand to say outloud tho.

 

On 2nd thought, i am okay with the 4wheeler driving general public who posts no truck parking signs everywhere they can, being handed the bill. Theyre the ones who demand all this consumer junk be brought to them by truck right?

 

None of this matters! All that matters is can you make it through with the pile of money you stash as you run.

My best friend has a 2019 Volvo and I have a 1988 Pete.

We have equal amounts of shop days over any random period of time. The only difference is he pays 2600 per month and I pay zero per month.

I started with a $10k truck and he started with a $160k truck.

 

As long as you feed it money like a casino slot machine. Take a Gamble and Double down, let it ride, or fold. And leave with your ego hurt. But still have money to your name.
But maybe just one more roll of the Dice, "come on sevens, Daddy needs a new truck."
