    Most of the runs I have been looking at I'm thinking are a 2 day run. 1 day out, and a day or half day back. We have busy and slow times, so I can work around that. Have been seeing some local runs lately also, so those would fit in. I'm defiantly not in to cheap freight. If it's not going to make money, I'm not interested. I've worked for free enough in my life, sure don't to do that any more. I'm thinking if I can keep this at $2.20 all miles or above, I should be doing pretty good. Hoping that's realistic.

    Try and push that to $3 all miles or you will be undercutting to be honest. On low miles like that you can go for higher rate per mile especially with flat bed.

    You’ll do fine. Is your authority for intrastate or interstate?

    Just the way I operate, but any short run I make, my loaded miles covers the deadhead back, if I pull a load back, that is gravy money and just a shot in the arm.
    I run 506 mile runs here, and never count on a load coming back,

    I'm sure that makes sense when you're unloading in Prudhoe Bay. The brokers won't be as receptive to round trip rates when you're unloading in Cleveland,OH.

    Do you have 48 state insurance with 1mil/100k coverage now? If not that'll be the big expense that makes part timing hard.

    If you go lease on, theyre gonna want you grossing 4-5k per week to recoup their insurance outlays. It wont be easy part time to make that much in current spot market.

    I have interstate authority. Trying to just run Ohio, but I am on the OH/PA border, so I can get some loads coming out of Pittsburgh and surrounding. Sure not wanting to haul too cheap. I have worked for free in the past doing different things, and sure don't want to now. I am not really wanting to haul coils, and that seems to be where some of the cheaper rates are. I have been looking at rates posted on Truckstop, so I'm thinking that these are some on the lower end. Will probably be able to throw some higher rates out there on the non posted loads.

    I need to have an insurance quote run again. I think about a year and a half ago when I was first looking into making this move I had a few quotes ran. With $1 million liability and 100K cargo I was in the $6000/yr range I want to say. My DOT # is about 15 years old, and I added my MC in 2011. Not looking at running all 48. Probably 300 miles from home. May make a run to Texas here and there.

    I appreciate all of the good advice. This has been one of the best threads on the subject I have seen. Definitely encouraging.

    Your pretty much doing everything you need to already anyway. I’d go for it!

    My Dad farms and I grew up on a farm of course so I know where your coming from. I mostly truck but do broker around 10 loads per week also and I have a farmer who does a weekly run for me every single week. He does it to supplement his income same as your wanting to do.
