Hello. I've had my authority for 6 months and looking into getting into pulling empty trailers. Does anyone have an idea of any brokers or companies out their. I'm familiar with onewaytrailer.

Also does anyone know the average insurance minimum limit for non own coverage. If I'm correct its at 30k. Just trying to get some ideas.

Pulling empty trailers, as in delivering them for dealers and such or relocating them as power only both will be covered by your cargo insurance, not trailer interchange/non-owned. You will need to declare this is what you are doing, make sure your insurance agent puts this on the policy and you will need cargo in the amount to cover the value of whatever trailers you are moving.

I did this as part of my towing and auto transport/driveaway business, it isn't hard to get the proper coverage as long as you have a real insurance company not a company like Progressive.

As for specific brokers, there really are not many that specialize in empty trailers, although you can contact the power only companies like Trailer Transit, Bennett and others to see what their requirements are to sign up as a partner carrier since you have your own authority.

Now, if you are looking to pull empty trailers that also allow a "load out", I advise against this. These are usually new trailers, and they will allow you to deliver a load while in transit to the end customer (owner of trailer), although they usually find ways to charge back all sorts of damages to you so you end up paying them for the privilege of delivering their trailer. Very risky.

See if world is still in business. Mark was the guy to talk to iirc in south bend indiana. They would either lease you on, or broker them to you. They could generally keep you running and was way better than oneway.

I also pulled direct for some manufacturers and used dealers. I would load out used trailers, but NEVER new ones, some brokers will try to get you to deliver the trailer for a small fee and have a load for you to supposedly make the money on, I would not pull them, when I pulled power only the trailer loaded or empty WAS the load, if I loaded it it was gravy on top of the load.

This can be a very risky way of trying to make a living doing power only. the majority of new trailers are like the OP stated called load outs ,where the trailer themselves pay very little and you can use it for a set number of days before you have to deliver the trailer. Like was stated you are responsible for any damage that may occur while you have the trailer and it will go against your insurance. And for trailers like new reefers you need to have 60,000 trailer coverage. Loads on DAT will state if higher insurance coverages are needed.

I was leased to a company that did the new trailer power only deal. Stacks of flats or chassis is the most loaded trailer we did. We never loaded out trailers as they had to be delivered in new condition. IMOP go lease to company that specializes in this and has done this for years and has the connections and trailers.

Take a look at DAT load board for Power only loads. You will see in the comments which trailers can be loaded and what cannot. Most brokers that have this freight do not pay well at all. $1.20 for non load out is about it and pennys on the dollar for load out.
