I've been doing FS for about 13 years now. Money is decent, but it is taking its toll on my body. Exploring my options on another CDL gig that will be local home daily. Because I still have a job, I can be selective and take my time looking. I have 20 years of experience driving (local and OTR). Need something in the Houston area. Working nights isn't an option (not starting at 7pm I mean). Any advice?

RJE Trucking maybe. Will train for hopper bottom. I don't know anything about hopper bottom trucking, but guess it's worth a phone call.

Start trying to get in with any of the big ltl companies? Kind of sucks to be starting at the bottom seniority wise if you are a little bit older but it's probably not too bad. Daytime p and d should feel familiar, but easier than food service.

What about the pay? I know I am on Mt Everest when it comes to manual hard labor and trucking so its downhill from here. I need to make 70k to make it work.

Need to be at slightly above $24/hr with 10 hours of OT weekly to make that work on P&D. Linehaul will get you there easier.

Linehaul (shuttling I believe) isn't gonna work due to the time schedule. I don't want to work those crazy hours. What is the starting pay for P&D LtL here in the Houston area for some of the bigger companies?

    FlaSwampRat Thanks this.

Saia LTL starts off around $29 an hour for P&D for anybody over 1.5 years experience around my area. Not gonna get into the camera thing because that creates too much drama...but $29 to start is #### good.

FXF around my area makes more at top rate (around $30-31 for P&D), and start you off at $27. Cost of living will probably dictate payrate.

National DCP/Dunkin Donuts pays around $28-30 an hour in some locations. Still considered foodservice, but everything is palletized and liftgate delivery. Only complaints I heard from them are the REALLY TIGHT areas that they have to deliver too. You may have to work at night depending on if you have a run that delivers to stores after hours where you have a lockbox to access the key for delivery.

How many of these P&D companies make you work dock. A friend of mine works for a local P&D company and he gets stuck working dock occasionally. I’d be pissed. I was hired to DRIVE.

Practically all of them. You name it...FXF, YRC, ABF, UPSF, ODFL, Central, A Duie Pyle, Pitt Ohio, etc...dock work is part of the job.

If you go on indeed.com and punch in City Driver/P&D...you'll see that most of these jobs require you to load, unload, sort, segregate, forklift, pallet jack, etc...which is dock work, whether it's at home base or at a customer. So technically you're not hired just to drive. It's one aspect of the job.

Seniority also plays a big role in what you do...even for the non union LTL's.

In short...all good things comes to those who can wait :)
