Acing a job interview?

Good luck. I would never mention my age at the interview. I would mention everything else you posted.

 

Tell them you expect to make money and you expect to make them money. Your job history shows you're reliable and you won't cop an attitude and ditch their truck in Jersey. Mostly, tell them you're independent and know we're not living in a perfect world...you'll do what it takes to get the job done.

 

Be honest, don't lie about anything. It will catch up with you. Go to the interview as they say "dressed for success" Look like you have respect for yourself and the company. Look the person in the eye when you talk to them. Also one very important thing is to know about the company you're interviewing with. Do some homework and have questions of your own to ask. Like salary, benefits, hometime, equipment, etc.

AS KW said, sell them on the idea that you are the candidate who will make them money. Interviews are the arena to sell yourself to a prospective employer.

 

Here is my take on this. You are a new student and you are young with no trucking exp. Don't try to dazzle them with song and dance because the song and dance is from another singer and dancer. Go in with a good outlook. Stay positive. Tell them you know that you are new to this, but you want the chance to prove yourself. Tell them you come from a line of drivers, but don't count on that to get you in the door. What may get you in is they know they can pay you less and train you the way they want you since you are not set in your ways as a driver. You can still be molded.
They will either want a exp hand or someone they can break into the industry.

When you have exp you can show them what cards you bring to the table. Right now you just want a seat so you can have cards dealt to you. Good luck!

Ever met a Supertrucker? Thats the person who has seen everything and done everything and knows everything about everything. Drove the first Peterbilt ever produced out of the factory. Was consulted by the DOT when they decided to make a regs book.

Want to pass a trucking interview? Cut your hair and be clean shaven, wash your clothes, get your clean jeans on, button up shirt, stand straight and tall and you will be their new poster boy. Go in there bragging about any advantage that you may have on another rookie and you shoot yourself out the saddle. Supertruckers always talk about driving. Dont talk about driving. Show them you can drive and you got the job.

Some old hand will be around the office. In his eyes, he will see a young punk. He will dislike you. He will ask you one question, "Can you drive, boy?" Thats a challenge, an invitation to a roadtest. Instead of saying yes or no or talk about the previous generations of truckers in your family, just say, "Got a truck available for a roadtest?"

Show the old hand that you can drive and he will respect you. Start running off at the mouth and he will tell the boss to throw your application away.

That'll kill it right there if he expects to make money . The carriers are more interested in students that will put up with sitting and getting less than 1,500 miles a week . The main reason they hire is to replace people that quit because they weren't making money .

 

For trucking job interviews, I showed up in a Carhartt pocket t-shirt, and blue jeans, and got hired.
As long as you are clean, and have a professional attitude, it should be easy. Don't go in there trying to be funny, or acting like a bad-axx.
