What's even cooler is when you get to return the favor to dad years later and take him with you.

Man that felt weird with me in the driver's seat and him in the jump seat.

However, he did manage to hog my bed while I was delivering! I had to try to nap from the driver's seat, just like I did 20 some years ago lol.

Good stuff. I remember those days. Back then it was the original game boy that kept us entertained.

No need to apologize for anything, I find all your posts to be enlightening, whether positive or not. I'm glad to hear you're still happy. It's completely understandable to be frustrated to do so much "free" driving and waiting around, even if you were expecting it. I'd probably have a hard time swallowing it as well.

It seems like you do a pretty good job of not getting too focused on what you make on a single load, and being able to look at the big picture. I think that's why you are as successful as you have been. Instead of being stubborn and refusing to deadhead too far, or refusing cheap loads and sitting still for a week waiting, you keep moving and you keep bringing in money.

I think if I were to get into the business, I would go in with the mindset that I'm going to be in the truck 315 days of the year, and I will make about $5 to $6 per hour, 24 hours a day for the days that I'm away, whether I'm loaded, empty, sleeping, waiting, or eating. But I suppose that no matter how hard I try to convince myself of that, I'd still know that unless the truck is loaded and moving, I'm not making money.

When you have to wait 6 hours to unload, you're able to do other things, right? Catch up on paperwork, surf the internet, read a book, etc.? Although waiting sucks no matter how you cut it, it seems like the best way to deal with it is to make the most of the time.

    Pharm,

I too noticed a difference in the tone of your posts (to me it seeemed like they have been more serious) and I mentioned it to my wife this past weekend. I wanted to ask, but did not know how to go about it as I did not want to give the impression that I was trying to offend in this virtual world. That would not have been my intention.

Bottom line is I admire and respect what you are doing and very much appreciate the assistance you have given me when I have asked a question. Your willingness to be open and honest about this industry....its ups and downs....in a public forum no less.....has been a tremendous help to me. For now...I offer a virtual "Thank You". :) I have even gotten a few guys at the office reading your posts and they are pulling for you (heck all you guys and gals), too.

I will be at MATS again next year...if you find yourself there, the very least I can do is buy you a nice meal......that is if you'll accept one from a lowly 4 wheeler (holds hat humbly in hand).... LOL...

Be safe...and Happy (belated) Fathers Day!

    R/

    Jeff

Yep, you got it. That is completely my philosophy and have taken some flack for it. You certainly can drown lower rates in sheer volume. See I've never trucked when rates were over $2.00 a mile (if they ever were), and my breakeven is around 75 cents, so I don't feel like I'm "losing" money at $1, though I can appreciate the resentment the more experienced guys have about it since they've had it easier before and can compare.

Fact of the matter is, I still need that 75 cents a mile whether I truck or not to cover my payments, so I don't see it as a choice. If I sit, it all gets taken a way. In the end though it's not really an issue because I am making money, but a lot will say that I'm working way too hard for what I'm clearing, and this is probably true. I hope it is, because that means it should get easier when the economy picks up.

As far as the waiting, well I can pretty much do all my paperwork over the weekend. If I'm away from home and out on the road, I want it to be productive. I have the internet on the road and lots of shows and movies so I don't get bored, but I'm not out here to have liesure time. If so I'd like it to be exploring a new area, but you're a captive audience in line. You would see what I mean when the time comes. I think the hardest part for me is that I see opportunities where real leadership could change things for the better, and I don't even mean applying intellect to the situtaion, I just mean having someone in the system that cares enough to sort things out. They could set appointments, upgrade retrieval systems, or barring all that, set rates appropriately for places that involve a half day's wait vs. in and outs. Just something to show that the time is valuable.

It's like if the UPS guy knocked on your door and you made him sit on your couch all day until you signed. It just couldn't work. We wouldn't think of doing it to them, but no one has a problem doing it to us. There are better ways to handle the issues in trucking. Someone just needs to do it.

I'm rambling. LOL today I had a rush order because they ran out of the corn gluten I'm hauling over the weekend. So I bust tail getting here and the belt system is broken. I get to sleep in line here until morning and I've been here 4 hours now and nowhere near ready for sleep. These things happen with at least enough regularity to really set you off. This is my time and my expenses too. If I'm broken down, I'm broken down. If they're broken down, I'm broken down.
