The shop is paying for everything. It's the local shop in our hometown.

Thank you all for your words of wisdom. Luckily no one was hurt and our local tire shop that did the repairs has agreed to pay all damages and labor.

300 miles and 7 hours is way too far to have not got out and checked the truck over....especially with new tires. Not sure about the law where you live, but in BC that is actually against the law as well. Here it is the law to stop every four hours or less and inspect your truck, trailer, and load. He would have caught the loose wheels before they flew off if he had. Also surprised he didn't feel a vibration as they were coming loose, and stop to find out why he had a vibration. Tire shops all over, stop by the next town, pull up and say i just had those put on can you check their torque for me. Someone will come out with a torque wrench and check them for you, if you don't drive with your own tools in the truck. This very truck I am in today had new tires put on it last month. I personally drove it away from the tire shop, I checked every lug nut myself after 15 minutes of driving, and again 3 hours later. New tires on my pickup in December, I drove home its 9 minutes from the tire shop, i checked every lug nut on it...and checked them again the next day to. But in a truck i carry tools, i check my own...if i didn't i would pull into a place in the next town, for me that is no more than 2 hours away no matter what direction i head out of town in, stop by the town tire shop, they all do it as a convenience for the customer. He really should have known, if not now he does. People are their own worst enemy usually.
I bet it is even printed on the bill he signed to get them checked within a certain number of miles. Reading what you sign is a great idea!

There was no warning more than about 30 seconds. It drive perfectly fine and he was going through a road work construction zone .

At first he thought it was just the road. In a matter of 15 to 30 seconds is when it all happened. It wasn't new tires he just had one repaired because it was almost flat. Apparently he had ran over a some type of bolt. Our local company that did the repairs has agreed to pay for all expenses.

As I said I'm his wife and I started this thread to ask advice about how to handle the situation. My husband has been reading all the post and appreciate all the advice he's also asked me to post this response for him.

I've been driving for 24 years and this is the 3rd truck I've owned. And for all you Truckin Heroes out there that think I should have checked my lug nuts every 50 or 100 miles,do you? I don't ever recall seeing not 1 trucker with a 500lb torque wrench in the tool box.and No it never said anything on the receipt and yes I got out, kicked and thumped the tires and done my brake check before coming down the mountain and everything looked fine and that was less than 70 miles back.It gave me very little notice of a problem maybe a 15 second vibration to figure out what's wrong at 70 + miles per hour isn't much response time. Thankfully nobody was injured and the tire shop has agreed to pay for all the repairs and get me back on the road. Be safe out there fellas.

I do not know about Canada, but that printed on the bill here actually means nothing, if and when it goes to court and the shop knows it. It does not relive them of any liability of doing a poor job.

    Cabinover101 and Fatboy2000 Thank this.
