I’ve been working for 2 years in the dump truck industry.. I like the work but It’s been rough for me... During the winter season there isn’t any work. And like last year that was from November until March (5 Months!) What do you experienced fellow drivers advise me to do? Is it like this with other trucking jobs during winter? Do you guys got tips for the winter? Help a fellow driver out thanks. I’m in the Central Valley, CA

I hauled dirt for 12 years.

There's work but you're lucky to hit 35 hours.

The one company I worked for 7 years. Was busy the first 4 years. It was winter unemployment the last 3 years. And it was nice. Paid vacation. Not having to drive in the snow. The last year was the worst though. Unemployment ran the entire 6 months. Summer hours dropped to 30 max. Yep. We're in a depression. The newly hired truckers who made less then me got all the hours.

The last dirt company I worked for. As I could no longer afford to stay with my 7 year company. Did snow removal. So they had plenty of work in the winter. Hauling salt. But you also had to work nights AND days for snow removal and salting. I had no desire to work nights, freeze my butt off, and dealing with broke down equipment.

I pull tanks now. Work year round. There's always loads to haul.

If you’re a driver Go into the rental industry. Herc,United Rentals, sunbelt, sunstate

Work is year round. Roughly 10-12 hours a day. Local only.

If you’re o/o you can always fish around and find something. Chemical transfer runs year round for instance

Is this a good job that has good benefits year round and you make 50k+ in 6 months or just some bs job that’s doesn’t have work?

If it’s the first situation collect unemployment and get a cash job.

If it’s the last situation get a new job.

My job is seasonal too but I make good money in the summer with year round benefits so I just will get a part time cash job no big deal.

One that pays cash so it doesn’t mess up your unemployment can’t be 1099. Straight cash.
