    People live there voluntarily.

as long as there is a food supply, the rats will continue to multiply, and live freely.

Rats and roaches don’t live in clean houses.

so, you're saying that a rat, or a roach, goes up to your front door, rings the doorbell, and when you answer it, they take a quick peek and decide right then and there if the house is clean, and leave?

what if the homeowner just cleaned THAT particular entry way, and the rest of the house is in a shambles, you mean they still pass it up..?? without a full viewing of each and every room, including the basement...??

discriminatory rats and roaches, i'd say.

I used the word “live” you will sometimes see them time to time, but if food isn’t easily accessible they aren’t going to be sitting there and planning on how to get into the food supply.

So yes rats roaches infest when food supply is there.

It's a port city, they are Norway Rats. If you've never seen one the size can be a shock, think house cat. They usually aren't around in daylight, but I remember watching a postman dance as one got encountered at the top of a brownstone stoop and they were trying to get around each other, the rat went through the postman's legs and down and gone, very quickly it wasn't there. It was probably 35-40 pounds of rodent.

One night I was on my way up to some forgotten chick's apartment on Columbus and passed a vacant lot with hundreds of them milling around in the moonlight. It made me reconsider the balance of power in the natural world.

Part of it is that cities are kind of stupid at certain things, and one of them is putting all the garbage (food) in big piles in one place.

But the OP is really dog-whistling, no mention of Queens --where a certain person comes from-- likely having the same issues.

I saw a rat in Brooklyn once that could have probably kicked a raccoon’s ###. Only rat I’ve ever seen that was bigger was Splinter ;)
