Buying a truck in the PNW and trying to work locally or regionally is a horrible idea right now. The rates out of that area are just about the lowest in the country at the moment. There are a lot of O/O's and drivers who get stuck up there looking for freight practically every day. I can't quite figure out why there is so much truck capacity up there, but I get the feeling that a lot of people such as yourself jumped into the business last year and now there are many more trucks than available loads. If I didn't have contract freight out of there, I wouldn't go anywhere near it.

Just out of curiosity I called Coyote yesterday on a load from Wenatchee to Fresno to see what they were offering. It was a produce load requiring a reefer running at 36 degrees, and the rate worked out to .84 cents per mile. If you figure that fuel alone costs around .50 cents per mile, then add the .20 cpm road tax in Oregon, that rate wouldn't barely cover those costs alone.

If you have a decent company job and live up there, I would stick it out and forget about getting your own truck at least for now. The DAT load board has 32 trucks available in just Portland for Monday and practically no loads.

 

Have you looked into logging/construction hauling.....?

 

How much experience you got? If you looking to do flat/step deck or Conestoga I work for guy out of Spokane. I haul nationwide but you can get CA loads and back to WA no problem. It Is slow right now. I was getting better paying freight in the winter. Where you out of?
