Who fills the secondary fuel filter on CAT engines when changing filter

I will either fill it from a freshly opened bottle of Howes (if I'm in a hurry), or leave it dry, crack the return line open and crank it until it starts, 30 seconds at a time with a couple minutes cool down.

I never let any oil change place do the secondary filter.

 

I use those paper screen funnels they use for paint to fill mine. Or get a plastic funnel from parts store that has a screen in them.

 

I've said my piece on a thread like this a few weeks ago and got flamed bad for it. So do what you want, its your truck.

 

I've been filling fuel filters full clean diesel before installing for 30 years and have never had a problem doing it that way. Never.

Having said that. Cat does recomend not too.

 

If you look on the Cat filters right on the side is a diagram of what you do, pour fuel in the filter, put filter on, you'll be cursing for an hour if you try to put dry filters on a Cat.

 

They recomend spinning dry filter on the engine then priming it with the hand primer to fill the filter. Takes way to long and is a pain in the ###

 

Also gives you a nice blister on your hand.

 

I use the howes and have never had a problem.

 

Not all of us have hand primers. I always fill mine. I have even chunked a new filter after I filled it cause I didn’t trust the fuel I used was clean. Chunk it and get another
