1099 and land star owner ops

If it is a straight 40% that is waaay better than fair, but there is probably some thing coming out of it. I always started at 25 and went to 30 quick, and they came out pretty good.

40 percent of what? The total? Or the truck owners cut?

 

If I recall correctly and I could be wrong landstar pays 65 percent to the truck.

So you would be getting 40 percent of 65 percent.

2.00*.65=1.30
1.30x.4=.52

The numbers will vary depending on what the truck earns. Ask also if any fuel surcharge is included in your rate.

Personally I would not even consider the job because it's 1099. Your on the hook for more taxes and liability.

For what it's worth. Today I accepted an offer pulling refer freight. .47 cents per mile, and up to 9 cents per mile in bonuses that are pretty obtainable and paid monthly. Free high deductible health insurance, 50 bucks a month to spend 30 minutes watching safety vids, all in a truck with an inverter, Apu, and a fridge. And that's as a W-2 employee. The choice is yours but personally I would not consider that job.

 

If you're looking for an O/O with training wheels situation it seems like it could be a good deal. 1099 is never a good deal long-term but if you just want to get a taste what it's like running your own show why not give it a shot.

 

That's a good way to look at it, I've never heard it put like that before.

 

Well it sounds like he will get to pick and choose his own loads, so if he takes a low paying load, his low pay would be on him.
I have taken landstar loads that paid me close to 5 bucks a mile, so if they are getting 35 % hen he would be getting 40% of 3.25. It is possible to get a shot in the arm at times when you control what you haul.

 

There are only so many ways to cut up the pie. Most of this is just cutting up someone else’s pie.
