Moving into my truck full time!

You will have some expenses. For example the mail. Here in America it's either the post office or a shipping office type business that has a address to you for a fee. Then when you pass through you get a pile of whatever mail there is. Most of it will be junk mail.

If you are ahead at the end of month on the road in trucking put it aside against a very bad month that could run you out of work. Trucking is not a career you can depend on for 30 years. Not very many people make it that long. Im one of them for medical issues. (Once repaired if pass a DOT exam I will be able to get back into it but very limited to one of three specific kinds of trucking.)

Eventually you will have a year or three or 5 years from now adding to that savings a good amount of money and be able to pick a place and buy it outright so that you will always have a home to return to. Things are pretty slow and lucky are those who can load and deliver at a profit. The rest close their doors.

 

Seek psychiatric help.....

Other than somewhere to receive mail I have no suggestions, just questions.

If you didn't have two dogs I'd say get a hotel room once in a while just to get out of the truck but that's not so easy with 2 dogs. Even harder in that area I would imagine.

Does the truck have an APU or is the company OK with you idling a lot?

Does the company have a shop where they service the truck while you're resetting?

Do you have a vehicle?

Not sure what to say but I hope you can make it work. You should be able to bank a lot of cash.

 

Get set up with a fridge and whatever else you need to cook and have food with you.

You'll be able to save a lot of money but food is expensive. If you can have your own food to eat that will really help you save.

 

Well us otr drivers practically live in the truck. But its still good to have a placeto call home or its easy to get lost out here. Ask me how i know. I basically live in my truck but i learnedi have to go home every once in awhile. Spend enough time out here and u become comfortable in solitude. I enjoy it but its not for everybody

 

Use to hang out there, was at Concord Transport 1997-2002. The Walmart was built during that time.
For a motel, we had two dogs. We use to go to the Howard Johnson straight east on seven just the other side of the Don Valley. Only charged us $50 a night back then.
For a few years I used Pak-Mail as an address in Edmonton. They had a key to get into the mail box room after hours. They would also forward my mail using a courier if was going to be somewhere for a few days. As an added bonus, no junk mail.

 

Super smart move man, for real. If I didn't have a townhouse that was underwater, form my first career. This is what I would have done 100%.

My biggest suggestion, try and reset on the road vs terminal Or get out of the truck as much as possible. When I was a slave at Bison, and could never get home, I used to always try to find truckstops in smaller city's/towns, that had 2-3 meal options, and maybe a theater or arcade like Dave and Busters. When I used to reset that the terminals, I would get depressed and never have good sleep. When I had to reset in Calgary in my truck (to avoid it being slip seated), I would park at the flying J on 114th and go to the Barlow Casino for buffet and beers, then Uber home for a bit and back to the truck lol.

Anyway, try and reset in different places if possible. My Favorite were Vegas NV, Barstow CA, Weed CA, Bennett CO, Fort Meyers FL, etc etc.

Whatever you do, don't sit in the seat and stare out the window for 36. TV, Laptop, Xbox/PS4, 36 goes quick lol. Also never hurts to clean/service the truck a bit.

I usually do 30 days on, 10 off when I come to work.

I always come prepared with a iPad full of downloaded Netflix and my running stuff to keep somewhat fit when the weather is good.

Eating - usually at the start I always eat good. I have a hot plate where I make eggs, toast and avocados in the morning. It’s also good for making chicken and steak, unless I’m at the yard where a BBQ is. Near the end of my 30 days is where I get lazy and start eating out.

I like having fruit in the truck if I remember it’s there, I was just going through my truck today and found 3 bad mangos.... that ir the bumpy roads killed them.

I'm more concerned about the dogs. Please find someone willing to take care of them that has a house and yard. Preferably on your route somewhere.
