I plan to get a 53' 8/9 car Cottrell highmount trailer. I am concern that with 8 cars, there will be overhang on front and back of trailer. Every trucks I see hauling highmount trailer with 8 cars have overhang. Are the DOT just lax about enforcement ?

It's very much a state by state issue. High mounts aren't technically auto transports unless they have a headrack, and then there's the 65' federal limit on high mount auto transports.

I know a ton of guys run them, but I'd have a hard time investing in equipment that could be enforced off the road tomorrow if everyone decided to start enforcing the law.

This week, I have seen hourly atleast a few highmounts with 8 cars from CA through to VA on I-40 and I-81. Does it means all of the states on I-40 allows overhange ? Based on published rules, it would be illegal. Passing through all of the scales, I did not see any high mount auto haulers being parked.

So for those of you who are hauling on a 53' high mount trailer, what states are giving you issues with overhang and overall length over 75 feet. Please share.

As the stingers were given the 80’ with the 4 and 6. Most states are making up the lost revenue on the high mounts.

Some states have even started nailing wedgies who still have beds on their trucks for being overlength for being a full truck and trailer and not a semi.

Ah crap... my overall length will be 76 feet.....

I just measured from my truck bumper to my kingpin on the fifth wheel 294". Then add the 53' of trailer minus 18" kingpin setback on the trailer making it 618" for trailer length from kingpin to end of trailer bumper. My overall length would be 912". Making me exactly 76' feet on overall length. This would be bad since max legal length limit for tractor and trailer is 75 feet.

I cannot move my fifthwheel forward towards cab because my drives may not clear trailer. Was told needed 55" from kingpin to mudflaps to clear trailer.

So are there anyone who have a T680 pulling a 53' High Mount trailer legally and under 75 feet ? My truck is only 236" wheelbase.

There is no length limit on tractor trailers, only on trailers. At least on the interstate and fed primary network. The overhangs are the issue, as most states don't allow overhang on 53' trailers.

Back when I had my high-mount the only state that gave me issue was Iowa. And then again perhaps he was just passing along his bad day to me?

Any given day, any given officer, in any given state. My fine was $365.
