I was buying some things from Freightliner and I'm going to buy brakes and drums and cams and all that stuff, and they told me that the brakes are relined and they need the core back.

Are relined brake shoes okay? Are they basically the same as a new set?

Yup. Might be all you are able to buy. We use bendix and all the old shoes go back for core. If its a name brand shoe I wouldn't even worry.

Most shoes made in USA sold are relined. Freightliner has been pushing some brand new shoes. Made in China. The few I tried didn’t hold up price per mile.

I ran them for years and had good luck, My parts supplier relined them themselves, right there in Amarillo at that time.
I can not even buy relined shoes in Alaska, at least not in this part.

Rideandrepair and Dino soar Thank this.

Do they still want the cores on those?

I got some brand new ones. Merritor, guaranteed not to rust jack. Painted blue, no core needed. Cost about $10 more than others.

    Im disappointed.

You would think I expect nothing but the top quality brake pads for what I do with them all on US33 between Harrisonbug VA and Judy Gap WVa.

If I remember correctly, Merritor, I had read about them a couple yrs ago. I’d have to dig up receipt, or call Royal Trailer, in Warren Mi. That’s where I got them. $55, I believe, put them on steers. Only place I’ve had rust jack, cracked shoe.My memories questionable. They’re painted a light, almost baby blue.

The best brake pad is not the same for all applications. They can all be top or poor quality with the same coefficient of friction. Meaning they do the job just as well but may not last as long.
More aggressive linings have more metal in them. A refrigerator magnet will even stick to some of them.
I like an HD2 over all. An HD1 is more mild and great for light operations. There are more aggressive linings better suited to concrete trucks and such. Expect to replace the drums at every brake job with them.
Maybe someone has a chart that lists other brands for comparison.

x1Heavy, Rideandrepair and spsauerland Thank this.
