As a future driver playing a truck sim to get a feel, I perceive backing is the granddaddy of all the skills. It's comparable to landing a plane or docking a boat. Note that only the trailer has EXPLOSIVES placards and all four sides but the tractor has no HAZMAT placards.
A navy recruiter once told me to go out on a party fishing boat to see how I handle seasickness. I suggest the trucking candidates try a truck sim game first.
here is a demonstration about how tough backing and maneuvering in tights places can be

that's a freaking game.....
try YOURSELF out here in New England with a 53 footer and sleeper truck in downtown Boston, my former route, where the streets are narrow and tighter than a tighwad money pinching man is...
then try NYC...and any other New England state......
forget the gosh darned games.....TruckGal13, Concorde, shogun and 9 others Thank this. -
That game is a colossal waste of your time. It won’t help you when it comes down to it, especially backing in really tight spaces. I go some places where I have stood up and looked down beside the passenger door to make sure I’m clearing something underneath the truck while moving. I can give you plenty more examples that game can’t replicate. I rarely use the mirrors until I’m in a straight line, I look out the door or open it up. And I make 20+ deliveries a week.
Quit worrying about games and cameras, you can’t replace hands on experience.homeskillet, wore out, TruckGal13 and 6 others Thank this. -
I disagree that the game doesnt help..It does help people understand 'somewhat' how much room it takes to turn and it does gives an understanding on how to back up.I drove for 5 years in real life but i also have somewhere around 2100 hours in that game..lol..
D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
OP, how old are you?
TruckGal13, Just passing by and buddyd157 Thank this. -
Having access to a real truck right now is NOT an option for me. I can't get a job right now anyway. I'm out of work on a neck injury disability. Some young clown backed into me while farting around with a smartphone and hit the front of my car at a gas station causing whiplash. It happened just this June at summer's beginning. I'm under chiropractic care right now. I can only play a sim now. -
