I've seen a lot of these posts. Can you really sell a MC #? Looking at the posts I see a lot of arguing about the legality of it
Selling MC's legit?

Of course you can, you have to sell the entire company, although there may not be any physical assets so to speak. Trucking companies get bought out all the time and their US DOT/MC numbers never change, just look at UPS Freight for example, They have the same US DOT and MC that Overnight had.
That said, there is little value in purchasing a MC number unless the carrier had been open a long time and has a clean safety rating as well as clean credit rating with brokers. In that case you can save thousands on insurance as well as have access to the top loads without the normal one or two year period of establishing yourself.DrDieselUSA and Wespipes Thank this. -
Not sure how anyone would argue the legality of it. What you can’t sell your trucking company now?
Maybe you’d run into a road block if you tried to sell a sole prop, which is another reason to incorporateBean Jr. Thanks this. -
How much is a good MC number anyway?

However much you can get for it. The potential buyers will decide.
