There are a handful flying around Canada, some in Europe and there were a couple in South Africa. Almost all that are still flying were converted to turboprop power and the lions share that are still flying like the one that went down are almost exclusively freighters.

I was going to say, freighters.

Makes me wonder sometimes why we hang on to those old iron for active freighting. What do they offer that modern planes cannot?

A much lower price tag. Most of these are older and as such easier to pay off.
However, there is an suitable modern replacement. The ATR 42/72 turboprop series. Its high wing, low load floor and T-tail layout makes it suitable platform for freight operations. FedEx bought a bunch of them for some of their contractor airlines.

For many years until recently, the local airport had a couple of DC-3's flying freight, but those were still using the big Pratt & Whitney radial engines.

I was out for a motorcycle ride with a couple of pilots. They decided that we should have lunch at a small airport. There was an aircraft parked near the entrance as we rode in. When we got inside and sat down I asked what they thought of the Convair, neither one knew what a Convair was.

Touch'e I think it had something to do with weight compliance on state routes but I suspect they bought cabovers back then because the fleet buyers don't understand conventionals.

For cabovers it was more about VEHICLE LENGTH restrictions. Once the restrictions were removed, cabovers almost became redundant overnight.
