Have you changed jobs within the last six months?

i am retired now, been a few months.

my "motivations" were to get jobs that were with-in my area, and not across the country, where i would need to find a place to park my truck, when i got home

reasons for obtaining other jobs were many like, one placed closed, and i needed a job

or, i wanted better working hours (less working hours), and better health benefits or retirement plans

in the past, the local classified jobs section in the newspaper, was where to find jobs

or

if i knew someone they would tell me who was hiring.

many times, posted on a trucking company property, was "drivers wanted signs" where i got another job..

some time, you just walk in, and got hired, but nearly all want you to fill out an application online nowadays.

in later years, i'd get job information from many online sites.

my last job which i retired from, was found on Craig's List, and was there for just over 7 years.

i prefer dedicated work, over running the road, and maybe sitting until the next load, or being away from home.

i had a "regular" work schedule of about 8 to 9 hours, 5 days a week.

so in most instances under 45 hours a week, all paid on salary, not miles or hourly.

websites i did try but were unsatisfied with, were Monster, InDeed, Yahoo hot jobs, My Career Builder, as they ALL were geared up for the mega fleets, and certainly NOT like companies that i had worked for.

I think those websites get some sort of "commission" for every one that responds to them.

even a state unemployment office seems to have more OTR (over the road) jobs rather than local.

the better jobs, frankly, you get by word of mouth.

the "jobs" websites (that i mentioned earlier) are geared up more for the large/mega fleets, not so much smaller companies. they have recruiters or head hunters as some here call them. they get paid a commission (fee if you will) for getting people to go to work for them.

a company that is not constantly hiring (we call that a revolving door company, or large fleet/mega fleets) does not need to pay people to entice you to work for them. they have better atmosphere, better pay, better equipment, benefits, and many long time employee's and actually can be difficult to get a job there, as practically no one leave.

"word of mouth", yes can be from friends that one knows from the business or relatives/family, that knows about jobs opening up/available. i never pursued any job from truck drivers talking about them at the truck stops.

I get a lot of email from swift and jb Hunt. Even though I specified no otr. I get a few others too. And the only local I've gotten so far. Sucked really bad. In every way possible.

 

Are you talking strictly about people who are changing jobs inside the trucking industry from one company to another, or are you also interested in people who are changing careers completely and coming into the trucking industry from another career? I'm a recently displaced IT worker that got laid off ( for the third time in my career ) at the end of May. I'll be starting CDL school on the 23rd of this month and finishing mid-December.
