On the topic of tires. A tire fund would be a smart thing. How much weekly would you advise to put away for tires? I'm talking trailer tires. I have a maintenance fund for the truck etc.

On a side note, I've been told that the average turn around time in the landfill is a maximum of 1 hour. How much truth is there to that statement (assuming it's a tipper, not walking floor)?

Depends which landfill. Most I’ve been to first thing in morning was at least an hour then on second load it usually wasn’t to bad.As far as tires I couldn’t give you an exact figure just know that you will have tire issues here and there running in landfills.I use to carry an air hose and a plug kit with me.I seen so much crap happen in landfills like dump trailers rolled over, pipes putting holes in fuel tanks, guys blowing out two tires,etc...

The trailer rental, is that a tipper or walking floor?

Landfills can be brutal on trucks., especially when it’s muddy. Pennsylvania
DOT loves trash trucks too. As bad as Pennsylvania DOT is now they have calmed down. They were way were way worse in the late 90’s and mid 2000’s. They would have
“ trash task force” jackets on with headlamps and surround the landfill at night trying to grab any overweight trucks trying to sneak in . Today
Pennsylvania landfills ( atleast keystone) won’t let you in overweight. Back then some trucks would roll in there at night 130,000 lbs
lol! I know they still concentrate on trash trucks , but they were over the top back then.
I don’t go to Pennsylvania anymore . I run heavy haul Upstate NY , 117,000 Gvw with a quad axle tipper with an overweight permit. New York DOT doesn’t treat trash trucks any differently than any other trucks and we run nice equipment. New York DOT really keys in on
smaller trucks like pick ups hauling car trailers
Straight trucks etc. I actually had a DOT cop tell me he can usually write way more tickets on them than tractor trailers ....Lol !
There’s money in trash Depending where you haul out of and if you have direct work. Grossing $2000 a day is possible hauling 35 to 40 tons out of some places. Many guys back haul
Salt which is another $400 to $800 a day .
Very hard on equipment, you have to have a heavy spec truck with 46k rears , big power
Etc to stay doing it long term, some guys run clapped out freight spec junk , but constantly break down and are targeted by DOT just because they’re running junk , not just because they’re trash trucks.

You can see this down behind Citi Field on Northern Blvd. All the trash trucks parked in the dirt, most of them clapped out freightliners with different doors or beat up bodywork. And trailers that have never been washed.

Yup need a spec’d out truck for this industry any regular freightliner,Volvo,kw and so on won’t make it I come to Keystone everyday, been doing this for a year not my industry going to try regional freight better off, and trust me there is money but sometimes the more you make the more gets put back into the truck.

2000 a day gross ain't bad. But I'm assuming you're filing a 1099 and independent contractor and the whole sorts?

Grossing 520k a year is great, then I'm assuming you're filing taxes, repairs on the truck/trailer, payments if you have, fuel, permits, and your cost of living, paying for a place to park, you're prolly down to 150k or so. Still a good living!

$2000 a day isn’t everyday . It’s by the ton and you have to run 110,000 to 117,000 gross close to 600 miles roundtrip. To do that you have to have a 4 axle trailer permitted for 117,000 .
The going rate per ton is any where between $39 a ton up to $55 a ton depending where you haul out of. My truck can run almost 40 ton legal
And at 50 a ton that’s 2000. You don’t always get the weight , sometimes you may only get
    29 ton , but usually 34 to 38 tons. That’s loaded
One way. Some guys haul salt back from the salt mine and make another $400 to $800
On the way back depending on where you deliver the salt. So on a good day you could actually make $2800 on a 600 mile round trip hauling trash up and salt back. We don’t back haul salt . Let’s just say the guys who haul salt back everyday are not on Elogs and run creative paper logs. It’s the only way you could really do it. There’s money in trash but you have
A lot of bottom feeders in it too, so you have to find places that aren’t flooded with trucks .
My trailers are loaded and I just drop and hook at the transfer station , no waiting around behind a bunch of trucks waiting to be loaded.
The landfill is a different story, if it’s muddy and there’s a lot of trucks you can spend all day there.
