I might be wrong but that doesn't leave much time to get confident driving does it?

Not to sound negative but you won't get confident driving while in school no matter how long it is. That will come out on the road, just take it slow and easy and the confidence will get there.

Why not a nice pretrip every day. /drive/back/post trip?

I’m guessing they do a pretrip, then y’all take a 10 and do another pretrip?

I did an imaginary pretrip at least ten times every day, had my wife hold the checklist and score me. Pretrip is easy if you do the reps!

I could have used a lot more time behind the wheel. I almost didn’t make it through company training, though, as I was hopelessly clueless with a manual truck transmission. And my backing skills weren’t as good as they needed to be. Fortunately, they stuck with me long enough for me to get enough practice to attain competency, and now that I’ve been working OTR for almost 8 months, I can do whatever needs to be done.

Pre trip is really important if not the most important thing about this job. I love nothing more than the sight of 70 drivers at the the truck stop up at the crack of dawn & outside pre tripping their trucks from front to back before the long day's drive.

That's why there's so much pee in the parking lot; pre-trip consists of standing between the drive tires and sleeper and peeing & breaking wind a couple of times; there pre-trip complete.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what good is spending the majority of time in driving school learning pretrip skills if you're not left enough time to learn how to drive properly?

To be honest it seems that you perform an intensive course, however, in fact it can save you time and money as you might need fewer hours' training. However, it won't prepare you for driving in the real world as much as conventional lessons will. You might not experience different weather conditions or drive in the dark, for example. Nevertheless, there are really professional CDL schools in South Dakota about which you can an article truckstuffusa.com, where you are able to drive in various situations, and, as far as I know, people that passed schools from that state are professional drivers
