37 years old ready to make the jump however i do have a felony that is 17 years old. I have a clean driving record and am located in NC. I have been in the plumbing industry for 17 years so employment history shouldn't be an issue only a 3 year gap in between jobs when the 2008 recession hit. I'm burnt out with plumbing and currently have no benefits. I'm entertaining the idea of getting my CDL thru a private school but i do not wanna pay a few grand if i have no opportunities once i get my license. Do you think i have a chance? Should i shoot for sponsored CDL training given my situation, being that i would have to start at a "starter company" anyways?

You should have no problem if the facts (one felony, 17 years ago). You may be restricted in a few companies. But, if you are open, and honest I wouldn't worry. You can get prehired but make sure they know about your past. Which I actually find impressive.

Probably don't even have to list the felony if it's that old.
Just go by the questions on the application; read them carefully and just give the information asked for.

Decide about school AFTER you find a good employer, not before. You shouldn't pick a wife based on which jewelry store or church has the best deal. The company you work for is a thousand times more important than what school or how to pay for school. You don't want to get your CDL and then spend a lot of time between "graduation" and day 1 of work. ANYONE can pass the CDL test. Almost anyone can get money for CDL school.

When completing an application ONLY ANSWER THE QUESTION THEY ASK. You are a stranger. They don't want your life story. If you have a felony that is old enough they may not ask. If you volunteer that info you may have just ended your chance of being hired. DO NOT LIE, but DO NOT SPILL YOUR GUTS. It's a job, not a therapy session. There are likely companies nearby by that will hire you. PLEASE DON"T RUSH TO WORK FOR STARTER COMPANIES.

Since you are a felon, check with your unemployment office about programs that will pay for your school 100 percent. Thats how I got mine - Good Luck
