that’s legal, unless you believe the T/A and Petro. They’re quick to quote DOT rules. That’s why it is so commonly believed. But it’s legal, I did it once, ran it for a short while, till I could afford a new one, had to wait a month or so to afford the other new one. Lol What can I say ? Times were tough.

I always thought it had to be stamped all position to legally be on the steer. But nothing surprises me. I’ve seen some crazy steel exposed on steers, still running them. Unbelievable

I'm not sure a single drive tire has the weight ratings to carry the weight. A steer tire is rated for like 6,175 lbs
Dave_in_AZ and magoo68 Thank this. -

Probably because the darn thing trashed the brand new steering tires 6 months ago and they didn't feel like throwing away another $1000 or more on the truck only to trash them too

wore out and stayinback Thank this.

I was always taught not to.....If I patch,Its going on a different position -
Are you sure it wasn’t just an aggressive steer tire similar to this log truck?
wore out, BoxCarKidd, D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this. -

It’s not something I would feel comfortable running on my truck, but technically it’s legal.
Final Drive Thanks this. -
Legal to patch a steer but marquee shops don't 'cause have you seen the dopes they hire? They don't trust their employees to get it right. Plus no money patching tires.
