As a general rule of thumb, for years, I've been told to stick with what you've been using, but I never really asked anyone why out of respect for those with years of experience.
A new to us 2013 D13 with 222K miles, was told has mineral 15w-40 weight oil. What are the myths or facts about going from mineral to synthetic? What sparked our interest, was the new 15w-40 T6(fully synthetic) and VDS 4.5 approved.

Nothing.
First do an oil analysis then change it and extend out the oil change, please don't waste oil by doing a 3 or 10k oil change with synthetic.Bean Jr., Socal Xpress and buddyd157 Thank this. -
the oil changes would be longer than before, try to stay at the change interval THAT company recommends.
also, check the owners manual for thier recommendations, or even the dealership, as things change from the time you first got that truck till now.
usually too, no additives are needed for "extra protection"
your engine will experience better starting and quicker lubrication in colder weather, as the main bearings basically sit almost dry (very little oil there) when the engine is off. it's when we go to start our engines,,,,,ALL engines, 4 wheeler or big rig, that the most wear takes place until that oil circulates.
also, that oil dripping down back to the oil pan will carry away the heat quicker (not that you'd notice).
many more benefits to synthetics or synthetic blends over conventional motor oils.
BUT...at a higher cost.Last edited: Sep 17, 2019

Good info and history to backup this oil brand and weight. -
Old seals can start leaking oil

I used to run Detriots 25 to 30K before changes. Synthetic was not a problem.
It does not matter much anymore this oil or that oil provided you run it. The only time I had trouble with fluids was in the older cars I used to own. Some of the modern oils did not do well in there at top end. I recall one employer who used tractor oil in his transmission, it ran with a attitude but it ran. -
