Landing Gear Busted

    Alright, Ive got a question for you guys, I was driving yesterday and I crossed a pretty rough track down in Kansas City, I only crossed doing about 20, and I didnt feel anything and it wasnt a raised crossong, but when I got to my drop the landing gear had completely fallen away on the right side, the cross members had yanked out of the bottom of the trailer bolts and all, and the bolts werent shiny where they pulled out of the trailer suggesting to me that they were in bad shape before hand. There wasnt anything visually wrong with the cross members when I picked up the trailer, and my sand shoe wasnt bent or scuffed up at all as if I had dragged the trailer on the tracks. Is it possible it had been damaged before I got it and the jolt from the tracks caused it to break free? I was about 32,500 on the drives, and I figure I would have felt it if I had hung up, plus Im not the kind of driver to just ignore visual damage I like to have it fixed. The company I work for doesnt do a good job maintaining trailers as it is, and Im just trying to figure out what the hell happened before I get crucified in the safety department

    I dunno. When you did your pre-trip was it damaged? Something the "just broke" on structural members would have been obvious.

    SHINY PARTS OF BROKEN BOLTS = GOOD METAL.

    Now if the bolt end is rusty 2/3rds across is was broken a while...turn your stereo down so you hear it the next time...were the legs 100% of the way retracted?

    You ever pick up one half of a landing gear setup?

    It ain't light and the last time I remember seeing one on the side of the road was .... well never.

    There was a set of tracks down the street here, and those recycle trucks would fly over them at 15 but never saw one come off the truck.

    So ....

    Sounds like you definitely got hung up on the tracks.. I picture in my head that you didn’t completely raise the gear or had your airbags dumped..or even both.

    I had this same thing happen 10 or so years ago. I didn’t even “hit” anything hard.

    The landing gear bolts were so rusted in the frame that the whole darn thing fell off as I was driving down I-90 in Chicago.

    That trailer was like 20 yrs old. I just brought it back to the yard and they made a storage trailer out of it.

    What a day.

    Most the time in a fleet, the cross shaft broke and most drivers dont notice that only one leg came up.

    We had that happen on a trailer a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately I was not the driver.

    I was reminded of one crossing in Ohio west of Seville (Akron more or less in Tornado valley) anyway its a dual crossing on the Toledo-Ann Arbor road.

    IF you crossed that one fat dumb and happy along with musical you will be minus at least one complete set of landing gear.

    I don't know the retail replacement will be.

    Call a tow truck and have it hook on to you and "Pick" the trailer clear of your tractor. Since you lost the gear 300 miles back there is no point hunting.
