Is there anything comparable in Railroad? Amtrak?

Maybe Maritime if you move up from deckhand?

    Or the military?

I hear exactly what you are saying and totally agree with where you were going with that. Other than taking a year off and then a year in a Fab shop it's all I've ever done since I was 17 (obviously on the dock until I was old enough and a driving bid opened up but the trucking industry still) I would like to think this is my profession and I'm proud of how well I've done for my family with it.

Are you checking for yourself or just asking a general question. Railroad has been mentioned on here before I believe. It is like truck driving with HOS also. My dad worked on EJ&E out of Gary, IN. He then could be bumped on off a run, and if hours were disturbed, they restarted. Didn't see a lot of him, we were at school, he was sleeping.

Just curious if other transportation jobs have similar training opportunities or pay and at a similar skill level.

I have a regional trucking job and based near Mobile, AL. I have a mild curiosity about Maritime work, but probably will just keep driving.

I've been following your progress in one of the Superior Bulk threads b/c I'll be where you are shortly I believe. Have you heard anything from them yet?

Actually, I'm behind you right now lol. I don't even start school until the 30th, but it's only a 4 week course so if all goes well I'll have my CDL come Halloween.

I was able to get one of the people at the terminal to confirm that my school is on their approved list, and that's about it lol. I've actually had some difficulty getting in touch with a recruiter, but I learned that they've been having some problems with their phone systems. I was told to call corporate directly and ask to be transferred to onboarding, so starting Monday I'll be doing that every day until I get someone on the phone. I'm also going to try and set up a day to go to the terminal in person and talk to the manager.

I don't know about maritime work. You hear about boats being pirated in foreign countries. Have you googled any info about it to see if there are any blogs or whatever like we have on here.

I don't think I've ever earned $40,000 a year and that is sense around 2008 and never had health insurance cuz I couldn't afford it. And remember we are and unskilled industry of unskilled labor according to our government labor board.

I think ours was adjusted down a whole lot this past year taxes. And I know it was less than $40,000. He had a little more off time though because of new meds, etc.

I think some stuff is more local like moving barges. Or regional Gulf work.

I used to Yard Jockey at a paper place on the Michigan (UP) / Wisconsin border right on the Menominee River. I'd some shipping and occassional tugboat going by. I thought that looked neat being on the water (no cars :) ).

I'm intrigued by it but not sure I'd want to start over again in another career. It might also really suck in the summer being on deck of the water. I'm from the Midwest I'd probably sunburn. Also after so my trucking solo, it would be really weird being crammed on a boat with a crew.
