Is there anything comparable in Railroad? Amtrak?
Maybe Maritime if you move up from deckhand?
Or the military?
I gather company freight driving, OTR, pays from 40-80K a year.

Just curious if other transportation jobs have similar training opportunities or pay and at a similar skill level.
I have a regional trucking job and based near Mobile, AL. I have a mild curiosity about Maritime work, but probably will just keep driving.NavigatorWife and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -

Actually, I'm behind you right now lol. I don't even start school until the 30th, but it's only a 4 week course so if all goes well I'll have my CDL come Halloween.
I was able to get one of the people at the terminal to confirm that my school is on their approved list, and that's about it lol. I've actually had some difficulty getting in touch with a recruiter, but I learned that they've been having some problems with their phone systems. I was told to call corporate directly and ask to be transferred to onboarding, so starting Monday I'll be doing that every day until I get someone on the phone. I'm also going to try and set up a day to go to the terminal in person and talk to the manager.MYSTYKRACER and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -

I don't think I've ever earned $40,000 a year and that is sense around 2008 and never had health insurance cuz I couldn't afford it. And remember we are and unskilled industry of unskilled labor according to our government labor board.

I think ours was adjusted down a whole lot this past year taxes. And I know it was less than $40,000. He had a little more off time though because of new meds, etc.

I used to Yard Jockey at a paper place on the Michigan (UP) / Wisconsin border right on the Menominee River. I'd some shipping and occassional tugboat going by. I thought that looked neat being on the water (no cars ).
I'm intrigued by it but not sure I'd want to start over again in another career. It might also really suck in the summer being on deck of the water. I'm from the Midwest I'd probably sunburn. Also after so my trucking solo, it would be really weird being crammed on a boat with a crew.Last edited: Sep 22, 2019
