Thought I'd start a thread with some anecdotes about things P&D drivers put up with from certain customers, or interesting and funny stories about delivery experiences. I'm sure many of you city freight peddlers can share some good ones.
One thing I've heard a couple times this year when delivering to a couple customers is "you're lucky we were here to unload you".
I look at them and laugh, and usually tell them that if they weren't, then they just wouldn't get the freight they ordered because I would have just moved on to my next delivery. Funny thing how their attitude changes the next time I show up with their stuff. They seem to make it a little more of a priority.:D

    One incident was a problem.

Manager was all huffy. Shuffing about like a lord over the trailer i was to take. I stick my head in the side door and its covered in fog all the way to the floor cannot see a #### thing.

Slam and seal, hook and go after getting rid of fussy boss after checking numbers a thousand times...

Had a thought the tractor aint working hard on a ridge towards Jersey. Get there. Open up at sunrise.

    EMPTY.

    Hey Boss...

It was about 5 more hours but they had the another driver bring up the actual load.

And thats about all there was to that.

I recently went to a construction site to deliver several large air ducts for an HVAC system. There was no contact # on the BOL to call ahead for the delivery.
I tried the general trailer, but it was empty, so I called the main office to get the number for the superintendent of that job site. This guy was a real horses patootie and started yelling at me over the phone that I should have called ahead and that it's not his problem.
I calmly told him not to talk to me in that tone, and then I gave him two choices. "Either you can get someone to unload your shipment, or I can leave and you can send someone to our terminal to pick it up"(the terminal was 50 miles away).
He changed his attitude really quick and got an off duty employee who lived nearby to hurry over and unload me.:p

Three of us show up at a highschool. Roofing foam. Local delivery.

No crew. No crane. No nothing. zip. Did I mention sideways rain? What we call a gale conditions.

Representative says put them there. There is inside the oval race track. Rain is increasing.

Number one says do what I do. he horses her HARD at 30. Bouncy off no more loaded. Big cubes 7000 pounds bounce along.

Number two does the same thing.

I horse her and got empty. Essentially a intentional jackknife and stomped the power to get straight.

We took off leaving a big pile of oversized dice in that field.

ive always wondered how that place is making out with all the leaks etc.

Once I had a load of shoes into SW PA. Its horrible there.

Sowwy no load here. Meaning you aint unloading.

STarted tossing shoe bundles out the tailgate. They came running. Those nikes had some value after all.

That was my very last load by personal decision. The next morning I was commuting to another trucking company swearing I will not touch another shoe load. And I have never.

Ive always wondered... if you toss a pair of nikes in downtown baltimore... today. Would it make a sound hitting the pavement?

Years ago I was delivering in a straight truck with a lift gate at UPS. It was around the holidays so they were loading me up with the crazy heavy bulk stops that wouldn't fit on the package cars. I get to the party City in Plymouth meeting pa, back up to the ground level dock door and ring the bell. This crabby old lady comes out and I tell her I have like 200 boxes or something for her. She starts yelling at me telling me how deliveries need to call and schedule so she's not taking it. I tell her I'm ups same as they get every day just with all the extra they ordered so fine...don't take it....refused....no problem. Then she decided all of the sudden that she could take it and was #####ing the whole time I was loading the gate up. Well I get the gate on the ground and start dragging the boxes in the building as she's storming around still #####ing up a storm when she trips over the lift gate, falls, and is laying on the ground crying. I never thought I could find a old lady laying on the ground crying amusing but I have also never met anyone in my life more deserving of it lol. Karma is apparently real.

Speaking of crazy biddies... I was on a McDonalds about 17 miles SE of reading and maybe 15 from near the pike. God only knows its three sided parking lot could hold 300 cars and a bunch of trucks at 630 am.

Im sitting there eating breakfast peacefully. Just manager and cook in there.

Here comes this lady. Marching straight to me as if she has a bone to pick. And how.

Hey youse, parking my spot under shade out back. MOVE IT.

WOT?! Took my keys off the ring throw them on the table and said YOU move the #### thing yourself. (Glad hands were switched on trailer and airtank manual drains were open ensuring a little trouble to get anything moving to anyone but me)

She turned purple. Why I never you whippershapper etc etc etc etc. Then bawled at the manager.

I left that place mentally repeating a mantra. I will be a safe driver right now I will be a safe driver right now considering I wanted to see how far her false teeth would fly.

Too early for that trouble. She can have a thousand shade trees over her blessed grave by now rest her soul.
