Every company I’ve talked to says I need the permit before I can go to school

    Sure you bet. Go to your DMV and upgrade to permit A CDL and go to school. You will be making use of it.

    The one they gave me is from 2015.... I can’t imagine it hasn’t been updated

    Take the tests that are on this site, Roll over the test's button and click Learn More to get the longer test. Take them until you get 90's every time. Then search for the site that has state-specfic tests and take those, they will be the tricky worded ones.

    Get doubles and tanker while you're doing it, they are just common-sense questions.

    I will second using the free tests on this site. They are almost verbatim to the questions I had on my test.

    study and take the test for the permit...it's not hard...that means you will get more driving experience in at school which is a good thing cause you will need that...the more the better

    Why would you think it's been updated? It's not like government bureaucracy is fast.
    Also, most states have it on-line also so just do a google search for "<state> CDL manual" and it will be the latest if it's from the state's website.
