Austin is not bad, however there was a Bonsian or eastern european truckstop SE of Lancaster a hour or so as the crow flies near I-35 prior to it's burning down, they had what I thought to be a hell of a food menu and a good cook and happy crew. I never stayed there longer than I needed to put away a good stiff meal.
California, New Jersey well represented on list of ‘miserable’ US cities

I’m sure Beirut on the Bay, also known as Baltimore, is on that list somewhere.
If I can retire it will be over on the eastern shore where normal people live.FlaSwampRat, dwells40, x1Heavy and 1 other person Thank this. -
"The Boss" sang it best when he sang about the towns going away after the mill closed.
For us it started about late 70's when the first big box stores were built. In those days it was a marvel and a tourist destination to have everything you need to build a home inside one warehouse store. However within a few years the inner core of several towns were out of business, followed by fires as they burned out later. Because no one would invest in that kind of retail money. Preferring to go to the mall on the town line or better yet the next county over.
This mall died in Owings Mills Maryland and is rotting to this day publicly.
Its been demolished. Which is a good thing.
Here is a video which I think is one of the last surviving. There was a daylight murder within walking distance of the facility shortly before its degrading.

Here's something I heard on the radio today. @Dave_in_AZ maybe interested also. It's in Caliente, Nevada.

Caliente
City in Nevada
Caliente, formerly known as Culverwell and Calientes, is a city in Lincoln County, Nevada, United States. Its elevation is 4,300 feet. The population was 1,130 at the 2010 census, making it the least populated incorporated city in Nevada. The city's name originated from the nearby hot springs, as "caliente" is the Spanish word meaning "hot".

I noticed that all the bad towns in California were in the LA and southern part of the state.
That makes me doubt the validity of the list.
Anybody been to Oakland lately? Or South Sacramento? How about Fresno? Oroville? Eureka?
There's plenty of bad to go around. -
