Millis Training Institute - Cartersville 2019

    First question that many people ask is how much will the trucking company pay me during training. Millis not only doesn't pay during training but requires the candidate to pay $100 to reserve his/her spot on the training roster. Millis doesn't pay for transportation to Cartersville for CDL students. The company does provide a van for driving from the hotel to the terminal and back, on weekdays. The van is kept at the terminal on weekends. Someone used up all the gas and ruined it for everyone.

    Lodging is at the Country Inn and Suites. It is double occupancy. The hotel has the typical amenities that we all expect to find in this chain. Indoor pool, fitness center, computer room, and breakfast included. The hotel provides breakfast and Millis provides lunch. If you want to look up the hotel to see what is near, the address is 43 State Route 20 Spur SE, Cartersville, GA 30121. There's a McDonalds, Wendys, and Burger King within sight. There's a Walmart 1.7 miles away.

    Okay, we aren't here to talk about the hotel. We all know what a hotel is like. (Side note: If you are a Radisson Rewards member, add your account to the room at check in. - Free points!)

    After eating some breakfast, I got ready for the bus. My paperwork said that I needed to be out front at 6:45 AM. It was 7:20 AM when the van pulled in with Jack and Steve, the instructors driving. There are only 5 in our class, there is usually 6.

    After arriving at the school, we made introductions, verified our information, and of course, paid $400. After that we went to a local medical office for our drug test. We spent the rest of the morning filling out paperwork.

    Lunch was at Wendy's and on Millis. After lunch we finished up some paperwork, then began with some PowerPoint and book work. Millis has changed to new books and they can't leave the facility. Yes, that means no homework. Wait? Is that good?

    The book used is J.J. Keller Entry-Level Driver Training - Obtaining a CDL Student Manual. It is available for $49.99 from the linked site. Day 1 we did:

    Chapter 1 - Orientation
    Chapter 2 - Control Systems / Dashboard

    Previous students complained about the uncomfortable seats. Millis paid attention. These things are comfortable.

    Those seats are the same seats that my truck has in it. Yes comfortable as hell!

    Day 2, was all classroom. Using the book linked in the earlier post we completed:

    Chapter 3 - Pre- and Post-Trip Inspections
    Chapter 4 - Basic Control
    Chapter 23 - Hours of Service
    Chapter 28 - Trip Planning

    We spent some times doing paper log books and getting a demonstration of the Qualcomm. We had some homework to take home with us. I twas a worksheet with 6 trips to plan the route and three terminals to find. We also learned about Macro 35 which will give us directions that have been entered by a driver who has been to that location before.

    Lunch today was at Zaxby's. Can't say they aren't feeding us. A major change in this class over previous classes is that we will have an opportunity to take our CDL Test at the end of our three weeks of training. Millis now has a CDL Examiner on site at Cartersville. The class before us was a class of 5 but one person went home. * Don't think that Millis won't find out about pending tickets you have not been to court on, yet. *

    We are missing the air ride part but they rock and swivel.

    Chapter 7 - Coupling and Uncoupling
    Chapter 8 - Visual Search
    Chapter 9 - Communications
    Chapter 10 - Distracted Driving
    Chapter 11 - Speed Management
    Chapter 12 - Space Management
    Chap[ter 22 - Environmental Compliance Issues

    We also went over the homework that we did last night mapping the trips, We continued writing in our log books. Lunch was at Arby's today.

    Crazy that they make you pay like that. So you paid $100 to reserve your spot and another $400 upon arriving? Just making sure I am reading that correctly. Anyway good stuff, keep the updates coming.

    Yes its $100 to reserve a spot, and then $400 on the 1st day of class.

    $500 up front investment...and sure, no pay for the three weeks of school, but you more than make up for that with really good pay while in your trainer's truck for all dispatched miles (probably be your best paychecks starting out). Plus paid room (shared, but good way to make a friend), hotel breakfast, lunch paid for. So you aren't making anything those three weeks but you also aren't spending much besides the initial fee.
