One of the thing that makes life a little more fun is after the obligatory half a day in a hotel clearing up; is the realization you have 5 days to do things on your own for enjoyment or education. It could be anything from a muesum to a living history or something else entirely. The main thing is Dispatch is no where to be "Seen"

Although it could get interesting if I was 10 miles from the trailer receiving instructor services on a very small sail craft. DC In particular. Lots of Subway services to get anywhere so the truck could be rotting in Shady Grove, I might be near Baltimore via Silver spring. Who knows. Another time it might be at the North Central Nevada Railroad that specializes in instruction. Get a diesel engine time vs a 2.5% mountain grade up and down as well as that on the steamer as well going up and down on seperate days. It's around 1800 this year, October is the last month to engage in that activity because Winter is not the place to be learning on that.

Here in Arkansas if your staff senses a lack of work for the day, they will take of and scram for the bayou, forest or lake somewhere; leaving you to hunt the servivors with the honey do make work fix it something or other. I think you also have a State Fair going as well. If you are foutunate to be in a quality fair that you enjoy in a state you picked last octorb

What you do not want is three days off in a hotel room with no money and staring at the same old tired television set.

Yeah, seems like reefer appointments for delivery usually between midnight and 5 am. Pickups can be anytime. That's my experience.

Lots of paving going on in Nevada; especially Las Vegas area. New Interstate 11 and connecting roads.

theres other really good paying work up in the elko area too.
my biggest issue trying to get away from my current position is that my current position is like a really comfortable bed in a place that doesnt snow. But unlike my coworkers who are fine just coming home and drinking their beer, I dont drink, and the comfort of this job just makes me uncomfortable, because deep down I know it wont last. the BS news reports on oil have good projections into next year and then some, the ones I like are the ones that talk about the supply of oil we have and the falling demand for it.
if the price for barrel collapses below $40 again, then the comfort will go away really quickly.

hazmat and reefer are to me the last that will be hurt in such a situation. that and again, i'm tired of waking up to do the same thing every day. I seriously think its having a negative impact on my mental health. i'm only 39 and I feel this dull cloud has come over my mind, and I think its due to the lack of challenge, lack of changing circumstances. lack of adventure.
my coworkers keep putting their fear into me, reminding me of snow and city traffic, and how all the new drivers have made the roads worse, part of me wonders if their right, the other part of me thinks their a bunch of wusses, the road has always been hard. but its a hot fire you need to forge a great sword.

@silinus vers - your co-workers are wrong. Their thoughts are thoughts of those that are in a rut and don't have the ambition or vision to climb out. They're suffering from "myopic thinking."
Don't waste your younger years in a sweaty man camp unless that's what you need to reach a specific goal. Try something else for a couple of months and if it doesn't work out, return to the oil fields.

One thing that has stood the test of time is the oilfied being a boom or bust type of deal. It never stops but during boom times there is money to be made and not enough people tough enough to make it. Those that are money savvy and do, and got in with 2 or 3 years or more left of the boom, can and have set themselves up for the rest of their life, financially. Others blow and go and drink it up as fast as they make it, some sends it home to a woman than can easily spend more than anyone can make. It is just what you make of it.

Another thing that has stood the test of time and has grown too, is the fact that many truck drivers work hard to find the doom and gloom in what they are doing, I don't know if it is because they work alone for the most part and have too much time to think about what could possibly happen or what causes it, but many find the worst in about anything they are doing, and always have some gripes, this is across all aspects of trucking.
I have always gotten a kick out of reefers will always have a job, or tankers, or what ever. Well since 76 when I first legally drove a truck, I have not seen the time I could not make a living in a truck, period, have things slowed, have rates tanked, have many gone broke, the answer to all is yes many times over the years, but you could still make a living through it all, maybe not as good, but too many stress over what may someday happen, even stuff that has never happened at all.

Yeah I love Vegas. Got a lot of friends there I’m actually gonna move there too in 5 years or so. Got a kid in school and not moving until she’s done.

I was just in Boulder City checking it out a few weeks ago.

You know of any good union companies?

I know of Las Vegas paving.

I can do all things paving from drive a truck to operate and labor. So I would think I could find a job fairly easy.

I also know readymix but I prefer paving to hauling mud.

I know you got agg industries and NRM out there for union shops on the concrete side.

Not sure where the union shops are. I guess, contact the local union hall.

I love it here; beautiful weather year round and very low humidity, so the heat isn't felt much at all.
