I fell asleep riding my motorcycle home from a warehouse job one morning. Don’t remember much past getting on the bike to leave, woke up at a stop sign over 50 miles away, at the bottom of an off ramp. No clue how I got there or what woke me, it was 3am. The ensuing panic after I regained enough consciousness to realize what had happened certainly kept me awake for the rest of the ride after that!

At least I was headed in the right direction, and wasn’t dead. This was in the pre CDL days, but this and a few other scares have pretty much sworn me off driving more tired than a cup of coffee will handle.

In the 90s me and some jarhead buddies went to mardi gras from pensacola in my s10 blazer. We all got drunk but i the least and the other 2 incapacitated. The primary issue was wed been up at 3am friday for PT, then partied thru fri/sat and it was time to be back on base for check-in sunday morning. There hadnt been any sleeping the entire time save but for a driver seat nap here or there.

I was soberish but basically dead behind the wheel getting back into pensacola at dawn of sunday. The streets were empty which is a miracle because i drove straight through a red light intersection .. Mentally concious that it was happening but unable to wake up and move my body to do anything. Think i pulled into a parking lot for yet another "powernap" as i curbed all the rims across that intersection.

months previously, in that same vehicle headed to the same base from massachusetts... Id took a greyhound up to get the car at xmas. A buddy wanted to see some trails i knew that he didnt so we went wheelin and broke through some ice that took us until daylight to get it out. This got me caught in a big east coast snowstorm with 40mph visibility. I drove straight thru to avoid the brig, consuming 2 bottles of nodoze to make it and being very, very sick for about 3 days thereafter.

I wrecked that blazer in pensacola on my birthday by my own sober, wide awake error and it was by gods grace that i did. I hope my kids arent as stupid as i insisted on being at that age.

Well, i did a lot of drunk driving 20 yrs ago. Praise the lord no one got hurt.

It'd take me a year to drink a 12 pack now.

Stopped one night to fill up thermos was so tired & about 2.5 hours away from receiver. Walked in to fill thermos lady at counter watching me. I told her I really needed the coffee. Walked to the counter asked her what I owed her . she said nothing for the Dr. Pepper to get some rest I filled thermos with DP.

I once drove through Albuquerque asleep.

Was about 2am, headed east on i40 into Albuquerque. Last thing I remember is that big downgrade going into the city from the west.

Next thing i remember I am on on i40 in the desert east of Moriarty. I panicked and pulled into that screwed up rest area in Santa Rosa. It was full of coarse, and I ended up getting into a shouting match with another driver because he was parked illegally and was blocking the exit back onto i40. It was a CR England driver slumped over his steering wheel not caring nobody could exit the rest area. He eventually left and I headed back to i40.

That kept me awake enough to get to the TA in Santa Rosa where I had to park in the fuel lane for about an hour before the lot started emptying out for the morning so I could get a real parking spot.

As I mentioned; 'dream driving' I got MI confused with Miami. Costly mistake. Paper, of course. They found me a load after a 34 that I pretty much SLEPT through. I can still remember the dreams, to a degree.

Glad to have my 10's at home, and weekends off. AND if my company insists on a Saturday (like this upcoming one) I sure make sure it's within my legals. Learned the hard way, albeit safely. Never again. Young and gullible about 15 years ago; nope. I'm good. Staying that way.

2 for me. About a month after I started driving, same week. Was teaming, I drove overnight. First time somewhere around Milwaukee, drifted into another lane. Woke me up. Made it to the ta at the IL/Wi state line. Stopped to grab a nap, ended up switching. Second time was heading into new Jersey. Drifted onto the shoulder. Stopped at the next truckstop and grabbed a quick nap. Was enough to make my delivery. Was up basically 24hrs before I went back out. Never caught up on the sleep until we parked for a 34.
