Strictly W2, was paid percentage once long ago which worked out pretty good because you knew what the truck made that week (Or did not make when you bought a tire you ruined... eventually you quit ruining tires..)

In addition to W2 we add more withholding over and above so that our home state will get their money and not hit us with a large tax bill. They are reasonably ahead in budget but are expensive at the State level.

W-2 for every job, ever. Avoid 1099 jobs until you know the industry well enough to spot a good deal from a shady deal. Bankers don't like to see 1099 "jobs" as those are easier to inflate pay and hide other important details. There are tons of 1099 jobs doing OTR, but often 1099 = shady.

1099 jobs automatically seem like a 30% pay raise over a W-2 job since the money they quote is gross or before taxes are paid. Any 1099 job that is not at least 30-50% higher pay than a comparable W-2 job is just not worth it. You have no benefits, no workers comp, you already owe various taxes.

That's usually pay for extra things like detention or layovers, or moving trailers, or a flat fee for loading/unloading. It's extra pay in addition to the mileage pay you earn. If you are a W-2 employee it is also on W-2.

My job is W-2 but I've done 1099. 1099 jobs are good for those people with a jacked up license, those who have felonies, etc. They're good for rehabbing your career without having to go thru SAP or anything like that. I'll warn you, 1099 companies will try to make it seem like they're paying a lot more than W-2 companies. On the surface it appears that way. Now deduct the cost of insurance from your settlement, then deduct let's say 10 percent from your settlement for taxes. After you do that, your pay is in line with any other company. If a Chicago company pays 60 cpm or better, that's just because they aren't paying any of that other stuff. It's only what the W2 companies would pay you if they weren't paying benefits and such. Real talk, you're not winning if you're being paid 1099 as a company driver. W2 is always better
