havent been in this situation before..
not even sure I am posting in the right forum section.
I'm picking up a "new" used Dump truck from across the country. NC to OR.

The dealer says I can drive it home "in-transit" with no problems or other permits/ other than the paperwork showing it was just bought.

I know i'm weird for suspecting a dealer of misguiding me to make a sale.....
I cant call CMVSA before its time to fly out there.

Can I simply get the truck and say it's for personal use?/ not for hire?...
if so, am I HOS exempt / bypass scales?
basically treating it like a motorhome / RV
no marking on it and only a temp licence permit.

If not, could I use a "personal conveyance" for a one way trip?
    Thank you for ANY assistance!!

Take the bill of sale with you and so forth with proof of payment, photo copies of checks and dealer reciepts etc. There is nothing official with the truck other than some sort of plate to slap on there and something temporary to get it home. Its rather routine.

When it's time you got it home and get ready to put it to formal work, thats when you need everything. Inspection DOT comes to mind in the shop for the annual and so on.

Just hire a company to bring it home and it's not your problem anymore. And keep making money while is on the way.

Great idea, but I'm just a single truck O/O it would cost me nearly $4-5K to have it done and since I don't have another truck, I wouldn't be working anyway....

I could swear there was some kind of permits varies by state I had to get.
would I still have to keep a log / HOS or worry about scales as I would still get pulled in and checked)

Main thing is, you have insurance on it. Temp plate, should be good enough. No log is needed since your not running under any authority. Still the wrong DOT Officer can cause you grief. I wouldn’t blow scales, sure way to have a clash with the law. Current annual inspection wouldn’t hurt either.

A highway patrol stopped a guy I know bringing one in to Texas & asked for a log book. I would just to be safe.

Don't forget to have "Proof of insurance". The dealer should issue you a temp tag to get it home. Make sure it is valid for the time it will take to get it across the country. I want to say it was the truck I bought in KY. Could be mistaken. But was issued a 3 day temp tag on one of them.

The truck is the commodity, and as such needs all the proper tags, insurance, log books, etc. It really is no different than hauling a load for your company. Something like a service truck or whatever.
You will be subject to all regs, weigh stations, HOS, inspections, etc. About the only thing you don't need is an MC number and an ELD. No MC number as you are not hauling someone else's freight and no ELD as driveway has a specific exemption. Still need a log book though.
