A good way to check the better route, especially when loaded heavy, is to look at the estimated time it will take to drive on Google Maps.

The route through Springfield, MO is 635 miles, in 9h45m. The route through St Louis, MO to KC is 701 miles in 9h59m. That's an extra 66 miles in only 14 more minutes for a car. That means the speed limits on the longer route are higher, and/or there are less hills and/or there is more lane space for traffic.

US-63/US-60 to Springfield, MO is very hilly two-lane. There's tons of lights on the MO-13/7. If you are running 65 mph on cruise on the interstate, chances are you'll be running the pedal on the backroads, constantly slowing down for towns and traffic lights and instead of averaging 62-63 mph, you'll be down around 55 (at best).

That'll mean the time it'll take you to get to Harrisonville, MO will be the same it'll take for you to get to Kansas City on the interstate.

It isn't faster. It's just an option. It's an option to avoid going 63. There's no such thing as a "fast" route. More like "effcient."

If it were me, I’d run up to Sikeston then across 60. It’s 4 lane all the way across, there are some hills but nothing terrible, and there’s only about 3 stoplights left out east of Springfield. Plus the scenery is decent. Then 49 to 29 and you’re in Omaha.

It depends on how heavy you are.

64 only sucks for a short bit, although it's a nice area.

Just do whatever, it doesn't make that much of a difference.

    x1Heavy and bryan21384 Thank this.

Its been postponed to sunday PM.

There is a low level jet that is generating storm conditions sometime before monday morning. The storm prediction center has been following the possibility for several days. Its supposed to be foggy tonight which is another issue. When it gets foggy BEFORE a storm front passage that is never good. Usually it gets foggy after a storm line passed through and cleared the atmosphere out to calm it down.

We are in fall, that means mud season two and tornado lite until winter which will be about 6 weeks or so until first ice storm or snow.

If you visit Storm Prediction Center and LZK google code for Little Rock Natl Weather Service of Little Rock in the area, they update every 4 to 6 hours the weather situation. And usually pay attention to short term future events that are more dangerous than your usual run of the mill boomer.

Ive had so many tornadoes in my life here it's gotten to almost ho hum. But we pay attention when rough weather is pending more or less.

I would use the route in your question. I use that route when I have trips that way.

But there’s a whole lot less traffic on 55 and 70 then on 65 and 49.
