I've been riding for 33 years, and most of that has been on Japanese bikes. I understand the attraction. They're trouble-free, they're fast, they're cheap. I won't dis' anyone on two wheels, no matter what they're riding.
Yet, I went from an '04 Kawasaki ZZ-R 1200 to a 22-year-old HD Lowrider (now a VERY Low Rider because I don't want to sling my old and aching leg any higher than I have to) and I've never had this much pure fun on a motorcycle in my life.
And in half a decade, I've only had one major part vibrate off, so there!
How are crates full of new Harley-Davidsons typically unloaded?

Sturgis is HUGE. I don't doubt they got up to million it's quite popular, an has been for a loooong time. So it's totally doable to sell that many during the rally. I mean if you think about it...it's kinda low..650 or whatever bikes out of 700k to 1 million folks. Course...Harley's ain't cheap these days either.
Here on my sandbar we do a bike week. The Harley dealer here...does nothing like those numbers at Sturgis, but they stay busy selling everything else. Lot stays full all week. An our bike week is tame compared to Sturgis, old Daytona bike week, or the one down in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Ride what you wanna ride. It's your dime an fun not mine.
Fun facts about the Sturgis Rally...
700k to a million folks attend.
300 Million gallons of beer consumed during the two weeks
The first rally was in 1938.
It's going on 80 years old.
it's one of the larges if not the largest Motorcycle rally in the world.
Its been held every year since 1938 with the exception of 2 years due to WW2 due to the gas rationing during the war.
The year round population for Sturgis is 6,627. Poor folks, I feel their pain.
It brings in over 800 Million dollars.
Largest crowd was in 2015 with over 1 million attending. ( Can't find an exact number)
2015 also set the most marriage licenses at Sturgis...297 of them to be exact.
It's home to the World's Largest Biker Bar...The aptly named Full Throttled Saloon.
Saloon. Edit : I was informed it is open year round, so edited this to reflect that. Thanks to @WesternPlains . Sorry for any confusion!

In short...it's very popular. Not sure if the Biker gangs still go like they used to, but I'm sure they do, just a lot more calm then in the past I'd imagine. I know Daytona has cleaned theirs up a lot I hear. Last time I went was in the 90s. Signs everywhere about leaving your cuts, colors an weapons outside when going into a bar/restaurant/etc.
Sturgis is on my bucket list. I've done Daytona and Myrtle Beach, Sturgis though is one I look forward to attending eventually. Maybe I'll wait till their 100th year...
Sirscrapntruckalot - I wonder how much crap one would get if they showed up on a scooter...someone try it an let me know?Last edited: Oct 22, 2019

A scooter? Am sure you're familiar with that show "Orange County Choppers". On the last night of the Rally. Well... lets just say nothing for discretion... I met Mikey on his scooter very early the next morning in Sturgis.
They also sell mini bikes done up like choppers here. Can have fun.
Have seen a tricycle kids bike parked amongst motorcycles.
The Full Throttle burnt down. They rebuilt it out beyond Bear Butte up 79. I drive by it a few times a week. It is open all year. But only about one person working there. Always have a couple, few cars outside.
The Buffalo Chip is where it's at. Many old Rock and Roll groups have played there during the rally. That's where Steven Tyler fell off the stage.
They do hire law enforcement from all over the country to come in during the rally. Some specialize in things like bike theft. Go around checking bikes. etc.G13Tomcat, FlaSwampRat and Sirscrapntruckalot Thank this. -

Ah article I read said it was only open during Sturgis. I blame them for not updating it. My apologies for putting info out there that was wrong. Local folks an people who've been know better then me, an I can admit it. Edited my above post to the correct info on Full Throttle.
Yes buffalo chip, I also saw them mentioned a ton. Good to know on scooters. Down here they get all snobbish with bike week. We do get the trikes, which are pretty cool when all customized. Not seen a scooter yet. We barely see the crotch rockets during ours. Mostly Harley's that the owners never ride but for bike week. Which I think is weird, but eh...their toy not mine.
Either way...it's a helluva party, an super popular. I wonder how many they sell total through the event. All the makers that is not just Harley.
Kid Rock I think is on stage, according to the image link. Buffalo Chip it is...lest the sign in the background says so. LOL.
Seems they also do a contest...
