Right now I pay my guys per mile + drop/hook + detention. I'm going to be adding some part time drivers to work 1 or 2 days per week. I'm thinking that it would be more fair and enticing to part timers to get paid hourly than CPM. How does hourly pay normally work in trucking? Does the clock start and when you enter/exit the truck, or when you start driving? What's common?

    Thanks for your thoughts.

When I drove locally paid by the hour my time was tracked through my Elogs... Soon as I arrived at work I logged in and that was my "time clock"... When I got back to the yard and logged off that ended my work day...

Was a pretty simple straight forward deal.

For me, I go in the office, punch in at my scheduled time. Do my run for the day and punch out when I'm finished.
Elogs aren't looked at when payroll is calculating hours.

Yeah, good luck finding a part time driver that will work for mileage. I wouldn't drive a truck other than by the hour today. I've had a few, and it is really the fairest way to get paid, for any work. My time is worth something too. Typically, I got paid from the time I walked in the door, until I left, or with an elog, it was 15 minutes before and after the truck was running.

Start paying part time by the hour & you may have your full time guys wound up.

Previous job was OTR and paid by elog, on duty & drive time (both same pay).

Current job is local, paid according to time clock, clock in/clock out. 30 min break, if taken, is deducted. A lot more to it than that, as we have a trip incentive pay, but worst case scenario (truck break down, etc) we’re paid according to the time clock.

Install a time clock and have them clock in. Then mileage does not matter as long they return to the yard.

As soon your full time people understand how much they can make hourly then you have no one in that time slot.

Only job I had that paid hourly was in the moving business.
Every 500 miles was 10 hours pay.
Every 8 boxes packed was an hours pay.
Every 800lbs loaded was and hours pay
Every 1000 lbs unloaded was an hours pay.
We ran teams so truck usually did 1000 miles a day. And we packed and loaded 25,000lbs in 3 days.
Everybody had a different pay rate, it was up to each driver to negotiate thier rate with the owner. $35,000 a year was a sweet job back in 91

That's not really hourly pay though. That's just a weird way to define piecemeal pay.

Ya guess so never thought about it that way. But for a part time trucking job, that doesnt want to pay mileage. Might be a way to go. X amount of miles is x hours. Each stop pick up or delivery is x hours etc.. Way to keep an hourly guy motivated to not milk the clock
