Visit the terminal you're applying to and talk to the manager and see what they say. They'll likely tell you to go ahead and apply.

Finally got the call that my car is fixed and I can pick it up tomorrow. Been kind of dragging my feet since I didn't really want to set up an day and time to go to the terminal to speak to the manager without a ride, so all I've done this week is call the recruiter and leave a message (for the 3rd time). I've also been training my replacement at my current job and finalizing financing for school. All of that is pretty much squared away, so I'm gonna be pestering someone until I can get some answers starting tomorrow.

It really depends on the terminal honestly. Every terminal is different and serves a different part of the industry specific to their region. Some could be hammered busy and others scraping to keep everyone rolling. Superior does not haul cheap freight so there are times it may be slow depending on where you are. I think the office staff are always going to be busy, so much going on in there. I applied before I had my CDL while still in school & talked to the recruiter who basically told me to call him when I have CDL in hand. Once I had my CDL, I walked in to the terminal let them know I was ready to work.

So a little update on my end. Just finished first week of school, which is all classroom. Passed the in school final, so tomorrow I'm off to the DMV to get my permit and endorsements. After I'm done there, I'll be calling the terminal to let them know I've got all that done as well as my TWIC. It looks like I may have to wait until I have CDL in hand to get the background portion of the Hazmat done tho as the application requires my CDL number.

My first update in quite some time. I just delivered my first load on my own. Took some “fatty acid” from St. Gabriel, Louisiana up to Proctor & Gamble in Lima, Ohio. Everything went pretty smooth, drove through pouring rain the whole time from Olga but the truck handles it better than cars- saw a couple spun out in the median on I-59 Friday night. I left Friday afternoon & delivered Sunday morning. Spent my first night at a rest stop north of Tuscaloosa, nowhere to park at any truck stops by the time I was looking. Spent the next night at the Shawnee Fuel Stop in Lima, Ohio- nice place with showers and laundry & there were plenty of parking spots in the gravel lot. I missed my turn right outside the plant & ended up on the wrong side of the plant where the box trucks haul away the finished products. I ended up on some country highway for about 30 minutes until I could find a place to turn around. I didn’t read the delivery directions thoroughly & missed the part where it said go right to gate 6, that and I missed the sign with the arrow pointing right saying all trucks delivering proceed to gate 6. I have no idea how I missed that sign but I did. It was a beautiful drive through the country on a Sunday morning. The truck runs great, it's a 10 speed manual which is part of the reason for the delay in my release from training. I had to come back to Louisiana to drive a manual with a trainer for a week before being released. Getting back up there for that week took several weeks due to life and a hurricane getting in the way. I did get my week in corporate training accomplished as well during that time so all is in place now. I’m currently collecting layover pay in Cincinnati, pulled in yesterday afternoon & my next load to New Jersey doesn’t load until 4pm today (Monday 10/28) I should get about 9 hours layover I was able to hit Walmart yesterday and stock up the truck with food & water so I can get away from eating truck stop vittles. Not a fan of New Jersey but it’s all good experience for me at this point. Grateful to have a good job and a nice home & a loving wife waiting on me, God Bless all

Congrats on your first load. You did the right thing once you missed your turn into gate 6. Gotta have the patience to wait for a good, safe turnaround...no matter how long it takes.
    Best of luck to you.

Glad to hear the positive update, I had been wondering what was going on w/ you but just figured you'd been busy out running the roads. It's good to hear that Superior was flexible / patient and able to work w/ you through the life events that kept you occupied. Be sure to keep us posted on the real world working life of a new tanker driver!

Just a little update on me, like @WIlee81 I got my permit a few weeks back and I'm about half-way through my CDL class at HCC on schedule to complete in mid-December. I submitted an on-line application to Superior and the terminal manager for Pasadena, TX sent me an e-mail to call and talk to him about a week later. Called and had a good conversation w/ the TM and told him where I was in school and when I'd be done. He said it all sounded good and when I get done I should reach back out to him and he'll need my CDL, completion certificate and transcript and presumably if there's still positions open they should be able to work me into orientation after the first of the year. Right now it appears they're looking for OTR / system drivers.

Hey man I was just about to send you a message to make sure you were still alive! All is good on my front. Just completed school and got my CDL on Friday! I called the terminal Friday to let them know, and called the recruiter today to let him know as well! He had me resubmit my app showing school completion and that I have my CLD and TWIC. Apparently there's a new TM at St. Gabriel, so it looks like I'll have to start my song and dance over and head down there probably tomorrow to introduce myself to him.

Glad to hear you're finally out on the road, and safe travels!

Congrats man! Time to get out there & do some training. John is the new terminal manager, seems like a good guy, he’s a driver with 25 years experience so that’s a plus. They need drivers, it’s busy right now, get in there and let ‘em know you’re ready. I’m headed back out this afternoon, just waiting on my trailer to be cleaned. $200 in layover pay today $$$
