I haven't done any split logging since the days of training new drivers back in the early 90s. I deliver cars and they got this new ridiculous log tracking device on our trucks now called Samsara. It used to be I could deliver my cars and get away with up to an hour over on my 14 as long as I didn't abuse it but now they don't even want us going 5 minutes over unless you have a mighty good reason. I have three stops to get off in the middle of the night before I go home to reset. When I checked into the hotel about 3:30 pm I had about three hours left on my 14-hour clock. I know that I will gain 14 back after a full 10-hour off duty but what about if I went back on duty after only 8 hours? Would I gain any time?

    Thanks in advance

You should be able to use any of the unused 11/14 from before you took your break, but you cannot exceed your 11/14/70.

    Split break is basically:
    • 8 hours pauses your 14
    • 2 hours does not pause your 14
    • the two break periods (8 and 2) can be taken in any order
    • the two work periods on either side of either break, added together, cannot exceed your 11/14/70

    Ok thanks
I need about 5 hrs so I guess that means I'm in for 10.

The 8 hrs must be in sleeper berth. The 2 hrs can be off duty or sleeper.

    Example:
    08:00, drive 7 hrs
    15:00, take 8-hr sleeper break (pauses 14)
    23:00, drive 4 hrs (11-hr drive rule)
    03:00, take 2-hr break
05:00, can drive 7 hrs (new 14-hr clock starting from 23:00)

The example above has been simplified. It’s missing two pre-trips and one post-trip inspection. You want a pre-trip at 08:00 and 23:00, and also a post-trip at 03:00 or 05:00.

Your ELD will do this automatically. Keep an eye on your summary tab to verify once the 8-hr sleeper or the 2-hr break have gone through. The 2-hr break is optional. Some people just use the 8-hr split once, and then continue their usual schedule of taking a 10-hr break.

Yeah, 8 hours SB will only pause your clock. You will have the same time left after the 8 SB as when you started. You kinda need to plan a head to use them.

Like if you get held up someplace for 4 hours or so, and aren't working, it would be a good time to start a split. You can spend a bit of in SB to work on the 8, sit for a few more hours to "pause" the clock so you have the same hours left as you did when you finished with your "on-duty" work.

Say you had 4 hours drive time left. You could drive the 4 hours then take two hours off-duty to complete the "10 hour". You would get your hours back minus the four hours you drove between the split. So you would get 7 hours drive time back after the split.

You could get hours back after an 8 SB if you had two hours off-duty or SB beforehand... You can do an 8/2 or 2/8. But only 8 SB will "pause" your clock.

you only get back what you used before midnight. so if you used 7 hours. then you get back 7 hours after doing a sleeper split after midnight

I don’t think that sounds right. It seems like you’re mistaking the 8-hr split with the HOS recap.
