I'm new to trucking and wanting to get my own truck, I'd like to move some freight bu I don't have an authority. If I leased on to another company do I have to deal with them exclusively or could I find multiple leasing companies and work for them?
How many companies could one lease on to?

It all depends on the company and if they are willing to do so. I know guys who do seasonal summer/winter work but remain leased year round to both companies in case one is slow and the other has work during transition time. Just need to display the proper DOT number at the time depending on who you are pulling for.

Wondering about what happens of multiple leases,if you're involved in an accident? Even with one name on the truck, seems to me lawyers would smell blood in the water, looking for deep pockets, with multiple leases. It's a litigious world anymore, lawyers just sitting around sharpening pencils, looking to pounce.

Derailed is correct. There are guys leased onto landstar that drive for other companies seasonally.
I believe it's a whole different truck they use though. -
About the only way I could see that being on the up and up, is to be insured at each company, but I am no lawyer either. A guy may be able to furnish his own insurance and get by with it, I can not imagine a company going for it though.
When I first started half of my freight was our on, I got my own authority because to lease on to anybody, my own freight had to be run through them, and I would have to pay a percentage for my own property. lolPE_T Thanks this. -
Why? A good company can provide all the work you need.

This. Youre only one man, it doesnt take much to keep you overworked. If youre leased onto a company with a lack of freight who wont let you fill in the gaps via loadboard, then youre probably at the wrong company.Old Man and kemosabi49 Thank this. -
I had one oo that also leased oin to Lynden, he too paid insurance to both companies, and I had to sign his lease to them. He still paid a percentage to my company, I thoughts he was nuts myself. lol
