Meh. Minimum wage is at, or close to, $15/hour here. Haven't really noticed a price increase. Then again I never look at prices lol.

There are already kiosks in every McDonald's without a $15 minimum wage...what does that tell you? It tells me that automation is going to happen regardless of pay.

$16/hr to weld??? I wont burn rod for less than $20/hr... Preferably $25/hr. I charge my friends $15/hr for serious welding in my back yard or thier shop... And that's pretty cheap seeing as most shops would charge $100+/hr to do serious welding work.

Yup. Much like hotshotting everyone went to school to go make that easy big money quick lol. Can't swing a stick around here without hitting someone that at least has a 3g so it's driving the prices down.

Every raise in minimum wage will attract drivers to those industries making our labor more valuable. I therefore support raising the federal minimum wage.

Thats crazy... Around here lots of folks "know how" to weld but very few could certify... If I took a few weekends and "knocked the rust off" I could go get my 6G Unlimited (any position, unlimited thickness) and maybe my R Stamp (certification to weld on pressure vessles)... But even with all that certification the only way to make the good money is to travel for weeks at a time to job sites. A few select shops pay pretty good, but most dont have very good benefits.

Ive done my share of welding, standing on my head, in a hole that has 6 inches of water in the bottom. Its cold, wet, difficult, not fun work... Yeah it pays good, but it sucks. And most fabrication shops dont even require official certification... As a result they dont pay well.

The good jobs here are at the shipyard but it's extremely hard to get in there. I know a few guys that do underwater work out in the gulf that get paid very well but that's about it. Working in a shop is a low pay job here, you gotta be hanging off the side of a bridge to make any money.
