... vertical cylinders that come out to the side of the hood, just ahead of the doors, on older trucks?

The air filters go inside. And they look cool.

Actually they were a really good idea. Having the air filter on top of your engine means its always in the way when you work on it. Of course it wasn't the sleek, sloped, rounded off looking truck that everyone wants nowdays.

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

    Air filters. Intake cans.

Fill them with spray ether until they are full then crank.

They are also status symbols of wealth. If you bought a pair of 40 gallon air cleaners in chrome its close to 5000 dollars for the two on your truck.

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

Aww so it's actually the folks selling them that are smart.

Not to mention that you have a hard time getting as much air when running the big dogs, and the fact that you are preheating the air too. lol They cut back on air drag, but are not as efficient for the engine.

Even a set of 15" vortex, which are probably asbout as expensive ones a guy can buy will not set you back over a couple of grand, which is plenty. The last time I checked, the vortex look a likes were in the neighborhood of 1 grand for a set.

Then you had the style where you had external air cleaners but you could set them to suck warm air from under the hood in cold weather.

Thank you for the update on costs.

The last pricing I remember was out of Nebraska at the chrome shop there for a set in 2001 which was just.. over the top. I would not presume to understand what they are now today for big trucks. Ive been away from shops like that too long.

    Again we appreciate you.

If you did that at our place the chief mechanic would remove your nose with an air wrench. ;)
