Fact: 2019 will have been a very bad year already. Could I be better off as a company driver or not?

I had a feeling that there was something wrong with my average rate per loaded mile at $1.80.. I am making a little correction due to my improper formula in Excel that treats entry of "Null" or no entry not as $0...which is the rate for miles run.
After correction, It makes my average loaded mile at $1.98 not $1.80...So I feel slightly better...not as cheap. However the deadhead miles increased to 17% (12 600 miles).
Lots of deadhead. So when I book a load, on average, it is slightly below 2 dol per mile...this could have been better, if not for those cheap rates from East Coast going back to Midwest.
However the all mile average at $1.68 remains the same.So does the money netted so far.

He said he's a company driver, so obviously doesn't know how taxes work for an o/o.

Isn't there a section where they can talk about what they know? The joy of working 50 weeks a year, begging dispatchers for loads and how much fun it is to park the truck for a 34 hour reset (hopefully dispatch will give them 34 hours, right??)? Some people don't get it for sure. None of us is out here doing this for the heck of it but it's not always about money either.

Yea even oilfield rates dropped way off partly due to boxes. Were back to yanking dry vans around the northeast. Used to be able to come home empty and grab another good outbound but not now we cant

We have a consistent load from the house up to northern mass (pretty good rate 1 way but can't come back empty like we used to) started teaming it this week.

Kick that load off in northern mass and dh 70mi up to maine. Kick that off in schodack landing ny and come back to the house.

Been using the same 2-3 brokers

I am sure there are dream CDL jobs. I was observing those WM drivers back in 2010 when I was close to them while pulling Power Only for Walmart as a company driver for a contracted carrier. Fresh coffee in every DC and kick back atmosphere - at least the one in Spring Valley, IL .
These are scarce jobs, and not attainable for most, so generalizing that running at 2 mil a mile as something worse than a company driver is completely incorrect. I was a company driver for 13 years and I don't miss it a bit. Even, if we presume that financial side to be equal all the time, I'd still rather be where I am at now.
Unless, you give me an exclusive job paying over 85 - 90K a year and I am home every day. Yes, these jobs are there but nobody will tell me that they're easy to get, otherwise masses of CDL holders would be lining up for them. Those who say they have jobs and would not want to buy a truck and become o/o, that's ok, but I can't see them, offering phone numbers to their recruiting officers.

Even though the rates arent super high anymore you can still make a good living by using your head.

If your strictly doing spot market like us find the smaller brokerages and get them to like you. Joke around with them, leave an impression it can go a long ways
