Over the last year, I have spent thousands of $$ in dealer charges for troubleshooting various aftertreatment system faults and issues. In April, dealer found SPN 4094 FMI 18 (Nox limits exceeded), SPN 5298 FMI 2 (Diesel oxidation catalyst conversion efficiency - data erratic, intermittent, or incorrect), and SPN 5394 FMI 17 (aftertreatment DEF dosing valve - valid but below normal operating range).

In April, Dealer went ahead and tested DEF fluid, EGR mass sensor, installed new 7th injector, cleaned the DOC and DPF, and performed regens. They also performed manual regen. Throughout summer, vehicle has ran fine for the most part. With recent spout cold weather, got the SPN 4094 FMI 18 (Nox limits exceeded) fault again and threatened to derate. Performed parked regen. Now, SPN 5298 FMI 2 and SPN 5394 FMI 17 faults are back. It also seems that after driving and pulling over, I am getting a high exhaust gas temperature light on the aftertreatment turn on. Engine seems to be running hot.

I believe in the past year, I have also had my DPF baked, and various EGR components replaced. I have spent several hours on researching this issue, and going to dealers takes a lot of time, cost, and they never seem to get to the actual cause of the issue (just replace a lot of things, trial and error). Based on my research, I suspect any of the three following culprits: a) exhaust gas temperature sensor (T1) or DPF temp sensor (T2); b) discharge recirculation valve (DRV) stuck open or closed; or c) DRV air solenoid not working.

Wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue and how it was resolved, or what you would suspect should be checked. Temp sensors seem to read fine, but I don't have access to the actual readings without going to a dealer. I suspect DRV not working since it controls the exhaust temperature. Ideas, thoughts?

Give this a try, Max Mileage. It will help keep the soot down. There are thousands of us using this with great results. I have been on it for 6Mo and haven't done a Forced Regen since. It does a lot of other things to but lowering the Soot levels is the best thing it does. It only takes 1oz for 25gal of fuel, I know it looks expensive but think it would be worth a try if it will keep you out of the shop.

I had same problem this week in cold bellow 30s, with my 2010 D13, blows thick white smoke when regen starts, wont reach regen temp, pukes the diesel injected by 7th injector out without igniting, had to delay ,stop and run parked regen. It used to run ok in warmer weather , now i see my EGT temp wont reach 600 degrees. It started with egr flow code, i replaced dpf 3 weeks ago, but didn't check the DOC, i read that clogged DOC increses EGR flow and drops exhaust temp, not sure if true.

What is the mileage on your truck??? I’m doing parked regen right now, was driving thru Indiana last night and temperature was in single digits at night, truck was idling whole night and today I got SCR performance low message. My codes are
Spn 5394 fmi17, spn 5246 fmi16, spn 4094 fmi18. Last winter was the same once or twice a week parked regen. Replaced both nox sensors didn’t help. I did replace all 3 temperature sensors on a dpf it made improvement but wasn’t a fix in itself. Now I’m thinking to try different doc, out of donor truck.

I replaced dpf in january last year, and again 3 weeks ago, but im not sure about DOC, purchased this 2nd truck with D13 2 years ago. The only parts left unchanged around motor are doc and ecm, i put reman motor replaced all the rest ,pumps, all sensors, egr, including engine harness.
We have same problem like Rhitrucking , but less severe.
My truck did a normal regen driving this evening here in Texas was around 36-38degrees outdoor temp, it took 30min, longer than usual 20 min.

I have a 2010 D13 (no DEF). I have 1.1 mil on it and have not touched the doc or dpf. I have the same symptoms for the 2nd time this year. The first was in Feb with the low egr flow code, low egt (below 600, which is actually due to increased turbo speed), and frequent passive regens (roughly every 800 miles give or take). Volvo replaced the egr valve and cooler. This fixed all the above issues. Starting in the beginning of October, I have the same issues again. I took the outlet hose off the cooler and it is pretty plugged up in there. This is however after a month of being on the Max Mileage catalyst without the diesel force cleaning that PP highly recommends but nobody offers for a volvo engine. I was told the catalyst would still clean the fuel and emissions system without the diesel force cleaning. Unfortunately I think this may be the an unintended consequence.

I called them when I ordered the catalyst and they couldn't do it in their shop and couldn't direct me to who could.

I couldn't find any data, numbers, or info on this max mileage. No cetane numbers, lubricity?? I did find The Red line brand catalyst, with data and specs sheets for 50% less, Saving of $110. Do you have any other info on that Max Mileage product?
