Overhaul..question

Well, I don't know about truck engines specifically but I know it was recommended to my family when we got a new block for our boat to put 20 or more hours on it varying the speed frequently before running it at constant speeds. Wouldn't surprise me if a truck engine overhaul needs something similar.

 

I was always told to run them hard or normal. You don't want to idle them. You have set the new rings. If the rings don't set good you get blow by. So that why you don't idle a new diesel engine. The S60 would get a lot of blow by when new at idle. So you run it hard or normal, pull some hills keep the engine hot and working to wear in the new piston rings . Make sure you give it 3 minutes minimum to cool down before stopping engine and 3 minutes minimum before working engine hard.. that what I did when I had S60

 

Dont idle except warm up/shut down.

Found best results breaking it in on a dyno. Then drive it as normal.

 

I wonder who told you that? I don't see how a cruise control( I think the new term is "speed control") is any different than your right foot. I was told to "get 'em hot", no idling.

 

Just drive it lol. Rings seat in within the first 5-10 minutes.

Don't idle excessively, make it work. Can't really see how holding a constant RPM is gonna ruin anything lol. Pistons go up and down, crank and cam go round and round.

 

If I remember correctly it takes like 20,000-30,000+ miles to break in a S60 engine. So running the cruise control is not a problem. Don't forget to change the first oil change like 5,000-6,000 miles. You could even change first oil like 3,000 miles maybe do another one at 7,000 miles. That's up to you

 

The cruise control does not hold it at one RPM, like a stationary motor. It let's up on the pedal going down, and mashes it going up, just like your foot. Don't be scared, buckaroo.
