A good hand stacked load of small squares will take a wagon over with it without being strapped down. Same reason hay pulls like a sob down the highway. Every stem sticking out catches wind. Property stacked the bales are "locked" together.
In another life I hauled concrete block locally. Our trucks didn't have straps, just a net on the outside rail a good foot away from the cubes. Friction of the block and watching how you drove kept the load on the truck.

I haven't hauled as much hay as a lot of guys but I hauled my share. It was mostly small bales, field to barn, and on good county roads.
We never tied anything unless it was going through town. It was mostly alfalfa and our local alfalfa in small bales rode like they were velcro'd
Baled rice straw...that's a different matter. Slick when it's dry and snotty when it gets wet. One load of that crap was enough.Lepton1, Swine hauler, cke and 3 others Thank this. -
See round bales daily, rare to have a strap other than the last two. And yeah it ends up in the ditch now n then. Not much else to talk about in the country.

Finished up, got down the road about a mile, pitched down into the bottom of the land with a 15 mph curve and watched in the mirror as six bales slid easy as you please right into the ditch. They were strapped 6 ways to Sunday, but with plastic on an icy deck it was like hauling running water.
I set the brakes and jumped out spittin' mad, ....and just then here comes a state trooper. He takes one look at my face, shakes his head and laid down on his throttle. Fine with me, I was in no mood.
them bales are still there, growing brush out of them now. LOLcke, randomname, Lepton1 and 5 others Thank this. -

There is special exemptions for hay haulers, that conversation has been beat to death time and time again , it is about as old as the chains vs straps on steel beems argument
