Hi everyone I recently got my CDL and heard car haulers make killer money and was planning on seeing how I could get into that business. As I do more research, it seems they don't make as much as I was lead to believe after overhead. Assuming they did though, I literally have ZERO experience driving a commercial vehicle and it's hard to find a company in general to hire someone without experience let alone in the car hauling industry. So people say go long hauling, well that's not an option for me. So my next thought was owner operator. Let's say I buy the truck and trailer, what then? Besides getting actual jobs how do I get the car on the trailer?! Etc. Who would train me to even do the basics? So now I'm back to trying to find a company to hire me for slave wages to teach me the ropes but how do I find these companies? Any research I've done points me to big company's who require experience and I'm assuming only a really small company would even consider me. Is my thinking correct or am I going about this thing completely wrong? Sorry for the essay and thanks in advance.

Another dreamer hu? “ killer money” if you got your hopes up and dreams of becoming a baller over night I got news for you.

    I recently hauled cars.
Top experienced drivers make 30% and the rest goes to the owner and expenses.
You might if you learn and get lucky make 15-25% if you’re lucky that’s if you can find a job hauling cars right now without ever doing it or any experience driving a truck.
There’s a lot more to cat hauling than just load the car up and go. What you need to do is find a company hauling general freight and learn how to drive a truck first.

by the way people that haul cars do it more because that’s what they like doing more than just trying to get rich. You gotta love hauling cars to enjoy it.

I honestly don’t know how to answer your questions. Because you want to fast forward 5 years in a 2 day span. Ir doesn’t work like that.

first things first. Insurance..... you gotta find someone that will insure you... then you’re gonna be paying 20k a year for insurance that’s if you find someone that will take you..

    now
Car hauler if you want to do a 7 or 8 car trailer you have to buy a truck and a trailer... then you have to set it up for car hauling. Then you have to find someone to load you or if no one to load you then you have to open your own company... and even then you’re going to too new no one will work with you.

what I’m getting at is.. go do something else for 2 years idk maybe McDonald’s server or something let your license get some age on it. Then try again.. because your only option is to do what you don’t want to do.

go otr for someone else it’s not the end of the world. And honestly with these rates youre making almost as much as an owner op after all their expenses if not more plus no headache

Biggest thing is people think it’s like buying a car
If you have 30k to buy a truck you need another 10 to get it on the road
    Insurance downpayment
    Registration
    Ifta
    Heavy duty tax
Just to name a few and those all are big numbers just to drive your truck on these roads in America is 550$ A year
Buying a truck and just going to work all on your own is not easy. Not impossible
But for soneone without experience or knowledge of any kind you have a better chance of getting hit by a parked bus

The same reason why someone wants you to have experience driving before they'll let you haul $100k worth of equipment plus up to 1 million in cargo and whatever damage you cause to people on the road, is the reason why you'll have issues when you buy your own equipment. Insurance, you could get your own authority plus your own insurance but this will cost you an arm and a leg which will cut into your profits.

Plus you know next to nothing about trucking and much less about hauling cars or have the necessary contacts.

So how much money have you heard we make?
    Killer money can be subjective.
Starting in carhaul as a brand new rookie with zero experience is rare, but not impossible. Cassens is one of the better companies and they will sometimes hire rookies and train you to haul cars. I know 2 very good carhaulers who never drove anywhere else first. You could own a brand new $300,000 carhauler and that doesn’t make you a carhauler. No legit company would lease you on and you would probably never get insurance to be a true independent. If you are willing to work for someone else for a while you can eventually make good money. If you want it your first day on the job, you may be disappointed.
