    G'day all,
Just as information and cost savings, I just did my California registration renewal.
I've always used a service because I worried that if I screwed up I'd be loosing Dollars chasing pennies...
So this year my service sent me the renewal invoice asking for my miles etc, I asked them to give me a breakdown of the costs.
    They were charging me $22573.00
    Registration - $2123.00
    Service Fee - $250.00
    Prism Fee - $200

After asking why the Prism was there they said it was DMV fee for bonded services to make sure there were no outstanding tickets.

Anyway I decided to save the money and do it myself...
It was amazingly simple! called DMV and got a great person who told me exactly the forms I needed and that she wasn't surprised that I was trying myself, she said it was relatively easy if you take your time and check all boxes, but if I did screw something up they would communicate with me via email to resolve it.

Took me all of about 45 minutes to fill in the paperwork and get it emailed to them, just wrote the DMV a check for $1875.00 saved $700...

Just felt like sharing, because I've always stepped back from handling Registration issues but its easy!

Cheers, if anyone has any questions about handling the California renewal let me know...

Glad to hear that. I was getting ready to pay a service to do it for me as well, but having trouble with their $500 fee just to do it for me. I was in the process of getting the forms to file it.

    For California they require,
    MC2117
    MC2118
    MC522
    Copy of your paid 2290
    Copy of your insurance accord

Email everything to irpcustomerresponse@dmv.ca.gov use your IRP account number (it's on your cab card) as the subject line .... once they receive the email they will process it and send you an invoice for the renewal fees which you can overnight to them at 2415 1st Ave MSH160, Sacramento, 95818

    SteveScott Thanks this.

Why folks continue to utilize "service companies", to the tune of needlessly forking over hundreds of dollars, or more, for something you can do yourself is beyond me. All it takes is a little time, research, and maybe some phone calls.....

Those are crazy fees. The service I use is like $40 and 4 hours less drive time, each way, than Tallahassee. Yeah I could mail it off, wait for it to be processed, mail back a check, and then get the plates in the mail but that’s a lot of trust in the post office.

    You get plates every year?
Wisconsin just mails stickers, we keep the same plate.

I trust the post office, in your case $40 is cheap and probably quicker.

FL changes the color of plates and issues new ones every year.

What a pita updating the plate number on all the paperwork every year, especially if you run permitted loads.

Just curious where your located... because Florida has 2 other IRP Offices. Sunshine Tag Agency in St. Petersburg, FL and Central State Apportioned Tag Agency in Avon Park, FL. I’ve renewed at both and never seen a outrageous wait line the DMV. In and out under an hour.
