Thank you Mr. @runningman0661 for this great thread.... Just found this thread and still reading the first pages... You wrote on your first posting they have mid-roof Freightliners, Volvos, Internationals and a few Peterbilts...
Do they also have high roof Freightliners and can a new driver choose what truck they want if it's available?
How often do they replace their trucks?
Do they have automatic trucks? If so, are they auto and manual as well?
And what kind of "safety features" do they have in their trucks if any? Cameras, bells and whistles, lane departure warning, breaking mechanisms, etc, etc.
And do they have any kind of "physical aptitude" test when hiring a new driver? Things like lifting weight, pulling and pushing weights, etc....?
Thanks again.. will keep on reading your great thread.... :biggrin_25519:

The condos are mainly for teams. They may give u the truck that u want if that model is available. They will most likely have u assigned to a truck b4 orientation. They have auto and 10sp manual. Drove a 10sp couple wks ago and it took a short time to remember the clutch. Kinda got spoiled on my auto. My auto does have the manual function. All the trucks have forward facing cameras. I think the newer trucks have that front radar thing. I forget what its called. I dont know what safety stuff the trucks have now. Mine dont have any of it. They do have the aptitude test. It wasnt hard. Carry 50 or 75 lbs few feet. Flatbedders have a longer test.

Thanks, like @truckerim2055 said, all the new trucks are equipped with forward facing cameras, lane departure, and anti collusion mitigation systems. All of these are pushed from the insurance companies to get better rates. A few of the larger companies that folded this year closed due specifically because their insurance costs were going to double, so I see why FCC has chosen to go this route with all the safety BS.

As far as the equipment, I have never worked for a company that maintains their equipment better than FCC. In the safety meeting this past Friday the president gave a year end “state of the company” address and said they plan on ordering 100 new tractors this year to replace older trucks, I forget the exact breakdown but the majority will be Freightliners and KWs, with a handful of Peterbuilts. I believe all the new trucks are automatics, they all have fridges, inverters, and APUs. When I came to orientation my recruiter asked which type of truck I preferred, and which color. I’m not sure if they still do that, but that was my experience.

As far as the agility test, it’s much easier than others I have done. You have to simulate pulling a fifth wheel, cranking down landing gear, and lift a milk crate of weight on a shelf. Anymore questions don’t hesitate to ask, and we will try and answer for you.

Thank you Mr. @truckerim2055 and Mr. @runningman0661 .... very detailed answers... I didn't know they had teams... if they do, I understand the high roof trucks will be given to the teams...
I was "afraid" they, like most companies nowadays, had all the "safety devices" they have.... Seems unavoidable these days.... as we are heading to autonomous vehicles....
Why do they want drivers to lift weight...? Talking about dry van drivers. Do drivers touch the load?
Mr. @truckerim2055 your truck doesn't have all the safety BS... You own your truck, right?

We don’t touch freight Per se, but on two occasions I have had to assist by operating a hand operated pallet jack, and on another occasion the place I was delivering to didn’t have a ramp, the one employee in the trailer was recovering from rotator cuff surgery and struggling moving the pallets, so I called FCC got permission to assist and helped push the pallets to the back of the trailer. Both times I was compensated well above what I expected.

For the most part FCC avoids drivers assisting on unloading for liability reasons. On both above instances It helped me get out of the customer quicker and I had to call and get authorization before helping. I’m in fairly good shape so I didn’t mind, if I hadn’t assisted it would have probably taken twice as long to get unloaded, so in my opinion it was a win win.

These agility tests all come down to the company covering their arse on Workman’s comp claims. Let’s say a driver has an existing hernia or back issue, applies to a company the company doesn’t do an agility test, the driver goes through orientation and his first week out says “ I hurt my back or suffered a hernia while lowering the landing gear.” Now the company is saddled with some BS claim that maybe could have been caught. Unfortunately we live in a very litigious society, and companies are just trying to lessen their exposure.

@Rocks our trucks don’t have the safety BS because we are both leasing trucks that are 2016’s and didn’t have the forward facing radar and lane departure warning systems.

I see that.. you are right about litigious society.... companies covering themselves and insurance companies
"forcing" companies to install all that "safety nonsense" For these reasons I have thought and still considering buying a tractor... However, I am afraid the business part of it would be overwhelming...
My former company is similar to FCC.... They are very small, in the 20 Best carriers to drive for in years consecutively and have been winning Safety Awards for years as well. A great group of people, take excellent care of the equipment... But they, like everybody else replaced all their fleet with automatic trucks, and every year they add another "safety device" and another noise and nuisance that takes away the pleasure of driving and the driver control of the truck.
Now I am abroad. Came here because of my dad's passing and I am the only one left to take care of real estate. At some point will go back to the US and back in a truck. My company definitely wants me back but I am not sure where to go....
